{"id":33751,"date":"2021-09-28T13:40:37","date_gmt":"2021-09-28T13:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/09\/28\/could-britain-stop-argentina-from-buying-the-jf-17-warplane\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T14:06:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T14:06:40","slug":"could-britain-stop-argentina-from-buying-the-jf-17-warplane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/the-americas\/2021\/09\/28\/could-britain-stop-argentina-from-buying-the-jf-17-warplane\/","title":{"rendered":"Could Britain stop Argentina from buying the JF-17 warplane?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ISLAMABAD \u2014 Argentina insists reports the country is buying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2021\/05\/21\/pakistan-delivers-jf-17-fighters-to-nigerian-air-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">JF-17 Thunder warplane<\/a> are premature, but analysts believe it could still succeed where other fighter types failed \u2014 mostly as a result of British pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speculation arose after media reports highlighted a request in Argentina\u2019s fiscal 2022 draft budget for $664 million to purchase 12 JF-17s from Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Argentina\u2019s embassy in Islamabad told Defense News that \u201cno final decision has been made, as there are five alternatives currently being assessed.\u201d When asked to identify those contenders, the embassy responded: \u201cWe don\u2019t have any information on those alternatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrei Serbin Pont, the director of Argentinean think tank CRIES and a former adviser at the country\u2019s Strategic Affairs Secretariat, said there\u2019s been a history of such speculation. Argentina has previously \u201cincluded funds for acquisition of aircraft in the budget, but the aircraft were not acquired. This occurred with Mirage F-1Ms and with Kfirs (canceled last minute in 2015),\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He believes the JF-17 is an attractive choice for Argentina because the aircraft is \u201cout of reach of possible U.K. vetoing of parts, and at the same time it is the only new aircraft within the budgetary restraints of the Argentine Air Force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2019\/02\/21\/how-does-pakistans-thunder-fare-against-contenders-in-malaysias-aircraft-competition\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635850959841994264-jf-17-thunder-sino-pakistanjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">How does Pakistan\u2019s Thunder fare against contenders in Malaysia\u2019s aircraft competition?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The JF-17 is under consideration alongside the Tejas, produced by India\u2019s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, and the FA-50 Golden Eagle, made by South Korea\u2019s Korea Aerospace Industries.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.K. previously pressured suppliers to cancel deals with Argentina, or sabotaged them by embargoing critical British components. Britain has effectively maintained an arms embargo on Argentina since the 1982 Falklands War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past decade, the country pressured Spain to scrap a deal to supply surplus Mirage F1M fighters, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2015\/07\/25\/argentina-eyes-second-hand-kfirs-to-replace-mirages\/\" target=\"_blank\">a deal for Kfir jets<\/a> from Israel appears to have failed due to a combination of British pressure and American control of the aircraft\u2019s J79 engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Britain also effectively vetoed the sale to Argentina of Brazilian license-built Swedish Saab Gripen and Korea Aerospace Industries FA-50 aircraft. And the U.K. stopped the return to Argentinian service of ex-French Super Etendard Modernis\u00e9 strike aircraft by refusing to provide export clearance for British components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the JF-17 can operate with solely Chinese subsystems, effectively making it immune from British pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Serbin Pont said, \u201cthe United States is making a push offering used F-16s, and another alternative being put on the table are modernized F\/A-18s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough Mirage and MiG aircraft are still under consideration, these are the least likely to be selected,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brazil-based defense analyst Alex Galante believes while \u201cthe Argentine government has a preference for the JF-17,\u2033 it might be \u201cawaiting a better offer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/the-americas\/2020\/07\/06\/us-approves-75-billion-in-foreign-weapon-sales-in-one-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">the U.S.<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2014\/12\/30\/report-russia-may-supply-su-24-aircraft-to-argentina-in-exchange-for-food\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russia<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Added aerospace expert Justin Bronk of the Royal United Services Institute: \u201cAfter other options have been repeatedly blocked or fallen through on finance grounds, the [JF-17] aircraft increasingly looks like the best option available.\u201d But at this stage, he added, \u201cany replacement fighter would be a potentially transformative boon for the Fuerza A\u00e9rea Argentina [Air Force] after more than a decade of unsuccessful attempts to replace its Mirage III and V fleets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Britain\u2019s diplomatic post in Pakistan did not respond to Defense News about how the European country might react to a JF-17 sale, but aerospace expert Douglas Barrie, at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, suspects Britain is closely watching the procurement effort because of the aircraft\u2019s weapons package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile the JF-17\/FC-1 as a platform has only modest combat aircraft characteristics, some of the Chinese air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles that are being or are already integrated on the aircraft are capable, notably the PL-10 short-range IIR AAM and the PL-12 active-radar-guided AAM,\u201d Barrie said. \u201cThe medium-range C-802 anti-ship missile has also been seen on development aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Bronk pointed out that the JF-17 has \u201climited range while carrying such weapons, especially in the context of Argentina\u2019s extensive land and maritime territory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt also remains to be seen whether the Fuerza A\u00e9rea Argentina would be able to sustain a decent serviceability rate with the JF-17, if delivered, as recent decades have not been kind to the FAA in this regard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Argentina\u2019s Air Force has struggled to replace aging aircraft and maintain offensive capabilities, having retired nearly all its front-line combat aircraft, save for some A-4AR Fightinghawk attack aircraft now supported by an even smaller number of IA-63 Pampa jet trainers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth-generation JF-17 is jointly developed and produced by China\u2019s Chengdu Aerospace Corp. and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, the latter of which produces 58 percent of the airframe and undertakes final assembly. The latest Block III variant, in production for Pakistan and being offered to Argentina, features a range of improvements, including an active electronically scanned array radar, plus the choice of a Chinese WS-13 engine rather than the Russian RD-93 that powered the first two variants and those in Pakistani service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The fourth-generation JF-17
