{"id":34035,"date":"2021-03-31T15:35:36","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T15:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/03\/31\/us-army-enters-final-phase-of-development-before-kicking-off-future-long-range-assault-aircraft-program\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:40:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:40:44","slug":"us-army-enters-final-phase-of-development-before-kicking-off-future-long-range-assault-aircraft-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2021\/03\/31\/us-army-enters-final-phase-of-development-before-kicking-off-future-long-range-assault-aircraft-program\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army enters final phase of development before kicking off Future Long Range Assault Aircraft program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>UPDATE <\/i>\u2014 <i>This story has been updated to include information from Sikorsky on its flight test program.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army has awarded contracts to both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/03\/16\/army-selects-companies-to-continue-on-in-long-range-assault-aircraft-competition\/\" target=_blank>Bell and a Sikorsky-Boeing team to continue<\/a> into a second phase of competitive development and risk reduction as the service prepares to begin its formal program to acquire a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/04\/04\/us-army-plans-to-field-a-future-long-range-assault-helicopter-by-2030\/\" target=_blank>future long-range assault aircraft, or FLRAA, by 2030.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Awarded through the Aviation and Missile Technology Consortium, Bell and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/01\/25\/lockheed-boeing-team-pitch-defiant-x-its-candidate-for-the-armys-long-range-assault-helo-competition\/\" target=_blank>Sikorsky-Boeing team<\/a> will each conduct a preliminary analysis of requirements for Special Operations Command, including for medical evacuation and features that allow for the aircraft\u2019s export to other countries, according to a March 30 Army statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the start of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/07\/28\/army-still-mulling-different-paths-to-build-long-range-assault-helo-prototypes\/\" target=_blank>official program of record for FLRAA in 2022<\/a>, the Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/12\/10\/army-preps-for-competition-limited-to-bell-and-sikorsky-for-long-range-assault-helicopter\/\" target=_blank>will choose a winner between the two teams<\/a> to build prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competitive demonstration and risk reduction, or CDRR, phase was set up a year ago to transition technologies from the Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstration, or JMR-TD, effort to the FLRAA weapons systems design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army awarded contracts to both teams a year ago to continue conducting analysis to refine requirements, conceptual designs and acquisition approaches needed to successfully execute the FLRAA program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the JMR-TD phase and into CDRR, Bell flew its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2017\/12\/18\/v-280-valor-flies\/\" target=_blank>V-280 Valor tilt-rotor aircraft<\/a>, and the Sikorsky-Boeing team flew its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/02\/20\/defiant-raider-and-sara-fly-together-in-first-public-demo\/\" target=_blank>SB-1 Defiant coaxial demonstrator<\/a>. Defiant had more trouble getting off the ground due to issues in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2017\/09\/11\/defiants-delay-due-to-blade-manufacturing-challenges\/\" target=_blank>manufacturing its rotor blades<\/a>, and thus started the JMR-TD phase over a year late, taking off for the first time in March 2019. V-280\u2032s first flight was in December 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a March 31 statement, Bell said that, through a \u201crigorous flight test program,\u201d the aircraft has flown more than 200 hours during more than 160 individual test flights that \u201cdelivered critical data to validate Bell\u2019s digital models and performance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defiant has logged 31 flights accumulating 26 hours in the air, but has also logged 1,500 hours in its system integration lab and 148 hours in its propulsion test bed, according to a March 31 Lockheed Martin statement. Lockheed Martin owns Sikorsky.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CDRR will allow the winner to complete preliminary design reviews for both the air vehicle and weapons systems in less than a year after the programmatic contract award, the Army statement noted, \u201cthus advancing the schedule to an earlier decision\u201d to enter into engineering and manufacturing development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An earlier decision \u201cwill provide more time for detailed design, building and testing of prototype air vehicles,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe award of these agreements is a significant milestone for FLRAA,\u201d Brig. Gen. Rob Barrie, the Army\u2019s program executive officer for aviation, said in the statement. \u201cCD&amp;RR Phase II accelerates digital engineering design work to the subsystem level and mitigates industrial base workforce risk while maintaining competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the CDRR, \u201cArmy leaders have had the ability to make early, informed decisions ensuring FLRAA capabilities are not only affordable, but that they meet Multi-Domain Operations requirements while delivering on an aggressive schedule that does not sacrifice rigor for speed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first phase of the CDRR focused on tackling a laundry list of technologies identified through an independent technology readiness assessment conducted by the Office of the Secretary of Defense. systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCrucial to the success of FLRAA\u2019s objectives is the deliberate integration of a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) into its requirements, acquisition and sustainment strategy,\u201d the statement said. \u201cMOSA is a critical enabler for improving lifecycle affordability, directly aligning with Army Aviation objectives to achieve sustained affordability and deliver continuous capability upgrades against future threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/03\/31\/us-army-enters-final-phase-of-development-before-kicking-off-future-long-range-assault-aircraft-program\/\" target=_blank>The Army is also seeking to field a future attack reconnaissance aircraft in a nearly parallel timeline with FLRAA as part of a future vertical lift ecosystem that will include air-launched effects capable of being
