{"id":34053,"date":"2018-04-10T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/10\/cobham-to-produce-oxygen-system-for-south-koreas-kf-x-fighter\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:40:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:40:49","slug":"cobham-to-produce-oxygen-system-for-south-koreas-kf-x-fighter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2018\/04\/10\/cobham-to-produce-oxygen-system-for-south-koreas-kf-x-fighter\/","title":{"rendered":"Cobham to produce oxygen system for South Korea\u2019s KF-X fighter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Cobham has landed a contract to design and produce the oxygen system for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2018\/03\/08\/with-delay-in-us-south-korea-turns-to-europe-for-air-to-air-missile-technology\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">South Korea\u2019s future fighter<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/03\/22\/saab-ready-to-offer-radar-tech-for-new-seoul-fighter-if-it-lands-maritime-patrol-aircraft-deal\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">KF-X manufactured by Korean Aerospace Industries<\/a>, the company announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under a multiyear agreement that covers the development phase of the aircraft, Cobham will develop an onboard oxygen generating system for KF-X. That system will include technologies including the company\u2019s Next Generation Oxygen Concentrator \u2014 which creates breathable oxygen from engine bleed air\u2014and its Electronic Seat Mounted Regulator that allows pilots to control the flow of oxygen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system will meet or exceed South Korea\u2019s requirements, but will also be able to be upgraded in the future with emerging technologies like pilot breathing sensors, the company said in a news release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> \u201cCobham has a long history of working with KAI on a number of aircraft platforms. We are very excited that KAI selected Cobham\u2019s latest oxygen concentrator solution for its newest platform,\u201d Kevin McKeown, vice president and general manager of Cobham Mission Systems, said in a statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe KF-X program is strategically important for Cobham and this contract award will allow us to continue to lead the market in life support oxygen systems for military aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea is developing the KF-X in partnership with Indonesia, which has agreed to fund 20 percent of the development costs of the aircraft. However, Indonesia has fallen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/singapore-airshow\/2018\/02\/05\/japan-and-south-korea-face-headwinds-on-homegrown-jets\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">behind on the payments<\/a> and could be forced to drop out of the program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The South Korean Air Force intends to buy more than 100 KF-X jets once production starts in the mid 2020s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cobham has already been selected for three previously awarded KF-X contracts, and will provide missile ejection launchers; communication, navigation and identification conformal antennas; and external fuel tanks and pylons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other subcontractors on the KF-X program include United Technologies Corp., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/singapore-airshow\/2018\/02\/05\/united-technologies-announces-role-on-korea-aerospace-industries-kf-x-program\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">which is making the environmental control system<\/a>, and Martin Baker, which is producing the jet\u2019s Mk18 ejection
