{"id":34240,"date":"2020-10-14T15:11:57","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T15:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/10\/14\/japan-launches-first-of-its-new-class-of-submarines\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:45:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:45:38","slug":"japan-launches-first-of-its-new-class-of-submarines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2020\/10\/14\/japan-launches-first-of-its-new-class-of-submarines\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan launches first of its new class of submarines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MELBOURNE, Australia \u2014 Japan has launched the first of a new class of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2018\/11\/16\/new-battery-can-double-the-operational-time-of-submarines-says-south-korea\/\" target=_blank>diesel-electric submarines<\/a>, which will complete the U.S. ally\u2019s planned expansion of its submarine fleet to 22 boats when it enters service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new submarine, which has been named the Taigei, meaning Big Whale, was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jmsdf_pao_eng\/status\/1316302007825625089\" target=_blank>launched at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard<\/a> in the city of Kobe on Wednesday. It is the first of a successor class to Japan\u2019s current Soryu-class boats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taigei is a 3,000-ton diesel-electric attack submarine measuring 84 meters (275 feet, 7 inches) long. The design was previously known as the 29SS class, named after the 29th year of Emperor Akihito\u2019s reign in Japan, which corresponds to the year 2017 in the Gregorian calendar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the last two boats of the Soryu class, the Taigei will be equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2019\/09\/05\/lithium-ion-battery-passes-rigorous-tests-in-israel\/\" target=_blank>lithium-ion batteries<\/a> as a power source. Japan has conducted extensive research into the use of lithium-ion batteries onboard submarines since the early 2000s, and says they require less maintenance and are capable of longer endurance at high speeds while submerged, compared to lead-acid batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan is the only known country to have operational submarines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2020\/03\/06\/japan-commissions-its-first-submarine-running-on-lithium-ion-batteries\/\" target=_blank>using lithium-ion batteries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taigei will now undergo fitting out and sea trials at the builder before it is commissioned into the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in 2022. When operational, it will become the 22nd submarine in service with the force, completing plans to increase Japan\u2019s sub fleet to 22. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The upsized submarine force will be composed of nine older Oyashio-class submarines, 12 Soryus and the Taigei. Japan has plans for two more Taigei-class submarines, and has asked for $654.1 million for one more boat in the Defense Ministry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2020\/10\/01\/japan-reveals-record-high-budget-request-supporting-hypersonic-tech-f-35-buys-and-more\/\" target=_blank>latest budget request<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision to increase the submarine force from 16 boats was announced in the 2010 National Defense Program Guidelines, and comes as Japan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2019\/05\/31\/much-to-chinas-ire-japans-regional-influence-is-becoming-the-norm\/\" target=_blank>continues to cast a wary eye<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2020\/09\/01\/china-planning-to-double-nuclear-arsenal-pentagon-says\/\" target=_blank>China\u2019s military modernization<\/a> and increasing
