{"id":34293,"date":"2018-07-13T17:03:31","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T17:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/07\/13\/why-wasnt-the-pentagons-tech-guru-surprised-by-google-maven-pushback\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:34:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:34:18","slug":"why-wasnt-the-pentagons-tech-guru-surprised-by-google-maven-pushback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2018\/07\/13\/why-wasnt-the-pentagons-tech-guru-surprised-by-google-maven-pushback\/","title":{"rendered":"Why wasn\u2019t the Pentagon\u2019s tech guru surprised by Google Maven pushback?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2018\/06\/26\/why-googles-project-maven-pullout-is-a-moral-hazard\/\" target=_blank>recent revolt<\/a> by Google engineers against working with the Pentagon\u2019s Project Maven program caught many in Washington by surprise and set off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/opinion\/2018\/06\/06\/no-surprise-google-bids-maven-farewell\/\" target=_blank>a wave of questions<\/a> about whether the Defense Department can work with the commercial technology sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Michael Griffin, the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering \u2014 charged with keeping the Defense Department ahead of its enemies and whose portfolio includes the department\u2019s Silicon Valley outreach hub \u2014 says the cultural fault lines that led to the reaction did not come out of nowhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was not surprised,\u201d Griffin told reporters Thursday. \u201cI spent several years out in Silicon Valley in a couple of different jobs. I am well aware that many folks do not share my orientation about the primacy of national security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Project Maven was part of a broader attempt to develop artificial intelligence for the Pentagon. The project took existing data from military archives and used it to teach the algorithm what to look for, and then began applying the algorithm to Air Force data in real time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to allow the computer to comb through the hours of live video collected by U.S. Air Force systems and quickly sort what is and isn\u2019t notable, as opposed to having an airman watch each minute \u2014 an effectively impossible task given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/isr\/2018\/05\/02\/what-the-pentagon-is-learning-from-its-massive-machine-learning-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">wealth of information<\/a> gathered by the service every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Griffin called it \u201cone of our early success stories in applying AI,\u201d noting the importance of training the computer to know what to look for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAI algorithms, machine-learning algorithms can\u2019t do anything a human can\u2019t do. We have to train them, OK? But once trained, they can do what they\u2019ve been trained to do by humans much more voluminously and much more rapidly than we can hope to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, an April revolt of 3,000 Google employees who signed an open letter against having to \u201cbuild warfare technology\u201d led to the tech giant announcing it would end its partnership on Maven come 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his talk with reporters, Griffin argued that the divide is a sign of a healthy American democracy. \u201cWe live in a country where such debates are not only allowed but encouraged. I don\u2019t want to live in a country where people can\u2019t have those debates and discussion and can\u2019t have their own views,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy view is myself and my colleagues are engaged in protecting their right to disagree.
