{"id":34564,"date":"2022-07-29T20:11:49","date_gmt":"2022-07-29T20:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/07\/29\/army-pursues-shared-software-among-uncrewed-vehicles\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:18:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:18:42","slug":"army-pursues-shared-software-among-uncrewed-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2022\/07\/29\/army-pursues-shared-software-among-uncrewed-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Army pursues shared software among uncrewed vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Seeking to bolster its development of uncrewed vehicles, the Army is using a separate acquisition pathway for software, paving the way for future coordination among platforms of all sizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army includes combat vehicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2021\/03\/17\/us-army-prepping-robotic-combat-vehicles-for-big-test-with-soldiers-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">modernization<\/a> as a top priority. The service has looked to develop three types of robotic vehicles \u2014 light, medium and heavy \u2014 to use as \u201cscouts\u201d or \u201cescorts\u201d for crewed fighting vehicles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the light and medium versions of the vehicle are undergoing testing at Fort Hood, Texas. However, earlier this year, the service said it would defer its medium-size vehicle program, choosing to first focus on smaller platforms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it looks toward light vehicles, the Army will pay special attention to the acquisition pathway the service is using for the vehicles\u2019 software, Doug Bush, the assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology, told reporters Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom an acquisition standpoint, we\u2019re focused on &#8230; the software, which will be critical for all ground robotic programs going forward,\u201d Bush said. \u201cGetting that right early is going to be essential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By developing the software separately from the vehicles themselves, the same software could be used across multiple platforms, potentially improving coordination and communication among vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The software acquisition pathway for the program will focus on embedded software development and sustainment activities, such as autonomy software, control station software and payload control software, according to the Army\u2019s fiscal 2023 budget justification documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pathway will also incorporate feedback from soldiers and other integrators into product roadmaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bush said that while the Army is still broadly interested in robots of many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/09\/21\/laying-the-groundwork-us-army-unveils-rough-plan-to-formalize-robotic-combat-vehicles-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\">sizes<\/a>, the service is focusing on light vehicles because it sees that as a necessary first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2020, the Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/01\/09\/army-picks-winners-to-build-light-and-medium-robotic-combat-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\">selected<\/a> QinetiQ North America to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2019\/10\/21\/the-field-narrows-in-light-robotic-combat-vehicle-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">light-vehicle<\/a> prototypes and Textron to build medium versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to budget justification documents, in FY23, the Army will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/04\/26\/army-to-launch-light-robotic-combat-vehicle-competition-in-fy23\/\" target=\"_blank\">launch<\/a> a competition for new light vehicles. Over the next five years, the service plans to spend nearly $750 million on developing light vehicles and the software acquisition pathway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
