After all, GPS was designed to enable navigation around the Earth, not in deep space. Space vehicles operating beyond the reaches of GPS have to rely on other methods for determining their position, navigation and timing, such as inertial measurements or even star tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those methods vary in reliability, so the Department of Defense is looking for a more accurate tool \u2014 namely, a quantum space sensor.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2019\/12\/31\/more-than-a-testbed-how-an-experimental-satellite-will-help-the-war-fighter\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cover_2.jpg_e2d433.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">More than a test bed: How an experimental satellite will help the war fighter<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Run by the Air Force Research Laboratory, the NTS program launches experimental satellites that test future GPS technology, allowing the military to ensure that future space vehicles have the most advanced technology. NTS-3, the third iteration of this concept, is slated for launch in 2022.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Innovation Unit \u2014 the organization within the DoD charged with leveraging commercial technologies for military use \u2014 is seeking a compact, high-performance sensor that can use quantum technology to provide precise inertial measurements in deep space. The quantum sensor could also be used in non-space environments where GPS signals are degraded and denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to DIU Program Manager George Sondecker, quantum sensors are an emerging technology, and a \u201cprimary objective of this effort is to mature the technology readiness of commercial sensors for reliable operations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DIU is not developing the quantum sensor for any space vehicle in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo specific platform has been identified. The sensor is intended to be applicable across a broad range of platforms for operating in environments where GPS may be unavailable or for enhancing operations where GPS is available,\u201d Sondecker wrote in an emailed statement. \u201cDIU is partnered with a number of stakeholders across the DoD to develop the Quantum Space Sensor identified in this solicitation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants will need to deliver their flight-ready prototypes within 24 months. Specifically, DIU wants sensors with error rates better than 100 meters per hour in deep space or 30 meters per hour for terrestrial applications while being no bigger than 0.1 cubic meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DIU is accepting questions through April 16, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diu.mil\/work-with-us\/open-solicitations\" target=_blank>responses are due
