{"id":34877,"date":"2020-09-21T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/09\/21\/new-us-army-radios-show-anti-jam-progress-at-network-experiment\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:16:11","slug":"new-us-army-radios-show-anti-jam-progress-at-network-experiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2020\/09\/21\/new-us-army-radios-show-anti-jam-progress-at-network-experiment\/","title":{"rendered":"New US Army radios show anti-jam progress at network experiment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army is seeing improvements in anti-jam capabilities in new radios crucial to securing manned-unmanned communications at its annual Network Modernization Experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At NetModX \u201920, which runs from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/yahoo-syndication\/2020\/07\/24\/us-army-begins-experimenting-with-new-network-tools\/\" target=_blank>late July to early October<\/a> at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey, the Army\u2019s Combat Capabilities Development Command\u2019s C5ISR Center \u2014 or Command, Control, Communication, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Center \u2014 is testing the resiliency of the new radios. The effort will help the service observe how they would perform in the field as the Army looks to partner humans and machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initial data from the event suggests the two companies involved \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/battlefield-tech\/c2-comms\/2020\/08\/14\/silvus-technologies-develops-toughened-waveform-for-us-army\/\" target=_blank>Silvus <\/a>and Persistent Systems \u2014 have improved their radio capabilities from last year, specifically in regard to anti-jam, according to Daniel Duvak, chief of the C5ISR Center\u2019s Radio Frequency Communications division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one major challenge is making the radios less detectable as the Army\u2019s tactical network team starts to focus on command post survivability \u2014 or reducing the electromagnetic signature of command post communications \u2014 while not sacrificing latency and throughput.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you want to make it less detectable, you know oftentimes you have to trade off the throughput or the range or one of those other products,\u201d Duvak said. \u201cSo that\u2019s the piece and the real technical challenge that they\u2019re continuing to work on over the next few months. We\u2019ve seen progress that they\u2019ve made in those areas, but that\u2019s the piece that they\u2019re still working on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert Stevens, an electronics engineer at the Radio Frequency Communications division, told C4ISRNET that the radios are an important piece of the next-generation combat vehicle. And Duvak said the Army\u2019s tactical network modernization team \u2014 made up of the Network Cross-Functional Team and Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications-Tactical \u2014 wants to use the radios as a mid-tier radio solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks-battlefield-tech\/2020\/07\/20\/how-new-prototyping-dollars-will-help-army-network-modernization\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-tradoc-training-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">How new prototyping dollars will help Army network modernization<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The new funds will prevent emerging technology projects from falling into the &quot;valley of death.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development and fielding of new science and technology projects can take more than five years; however, the Army wants to speed that up as it seeks to modernize systems in preparation for future conflicts with near-peer adversaries. At last year\u2019s Network Modernization Experiment, the C5ISR Center tested several vendors&#8217; radios to see where commercial technology stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternative contracting options, like broad agency announcements as well as cooperative research and development agreements, have proved critical to quickening radio development. Under the contracting mechanisms, vendors and the Army have more flexibility to experiment with radios and make iterative modifications as requirements change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duvak said this is different from how the Army did business years ago, when it would award yearslong contracts but eventually receive radios that no longer met current requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we were able to do at this program was, in just about a year and a half of development time, take a couple of those products that we saw that were very promising and we were able to add and actually fund vendors to enhance those radios with those resiliency features that we were just talking about for the contested environment,\u201d Duvak said. \u201cThings like making them anti-jam, or more difficult for the adversary to jam, making them more difficult for the adversary to detect or intercept our communications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duvak said the Army wants the new radio capabilities for Capability Set \u201923, a collection of new tactical network tools to be fielded to soldiers in fiscal 2023. The resiliency of communications is critical as the tactical network modernization team pivots to reduce the electronic signature of the service\u2019s command post under Capability Set \u201923. The team is looking to increase bandwidth and reduce latency as part of that set of tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preliminary design review for Capability Set \u201923 is
