NEW DELHI \u2014 BAE \u00a0Systems \u00a0of \u00a0United \u00a0Kingdom \u00a0<\/span>and India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.\u00a0Limited \u00a0<\/span>(HAL) are considering establishing a joint venture\u00a0teaming up , under \u00a0a \u00a0Joint \u00a0 Venture (JV)<\/span> to\u00a0co-produce\u00a0variants of the Hawk trainer,\u00a0[including Combat hawk] , \u00a0<\/span>upgrade\u00a0of \u00a0<\/span>the Jaguar aircraft and establish a\u00a0partnership focused\u00a0on\u00a0in <\/span>logistics and producing spares in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T. Suvarna Raju, HAL chairman and managing director,\u00a0said, told Defense News , <\/span>“We are in active dialogue with BAE Systems for exploring long-term opportunities to provide upgrades\u00a0and logistics and spares support solutions for both Hawk trainer and Jaguar combat aircraft\u00a0[which are already license-produced by HAL]\u00a0for a worldwide market.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HAL and\u00a0BAE have also decided to showcase a static display of the Combat Hawk \u00a0aircraft <\/span>in the upcoming <\/span>Aero India air show in 2017,\u00a0Raju \u00a0added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave Corfield, head of Hawk India, Military Air & Information, BAE Systems,\u00a0said, “Our goal is to combine our strengths with HAL’s to co-develop and co-produce a more capable version of Hawk for use in India and also to export from India to the worldwide market. A joint study by BAE Systems and HAL has indicated significant market potential for this class of aircraft. This more capable version of the Hawk is the Advanced Combat Hawk, or ‘Dream Hawk,’\u00a0combining improved maneuver\u00a0performance with laser designation, precision smart weapons and state-of-the-art synthetic training.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Indian Air Force \u00a0(IAF) \u00a0<\/span>official said\u00a0they have not considered ordering\u00a0giving order for <\/span>the Combat Hawk.\u00a0of the BAE-HAL \u00a0tie-up.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With\u00a0no confirmed market for the Combat Hawk trainer, analysts question the sustainability of the\u00a0are not sure \u00a0if \u00a0the \u00a0<\/span>proposed tie-up.between \u00a0 BAE-HAL \u00a0will \u00a0 have \u00a0a \u00a0sustainable \u00a0scope.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Only time will tell if a Combat Hawk will be produced at HAL,” \u00a0said\u00a0Nitin Mehta, a\u00a0defense \u00a0analyst here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts \u00a0are \u00a0question also \u00a0sure \u00a0about the \u00a0proposed tie \u00a0up \u00a0between \u00a0HAL \u00a0and \u00a0BAE \u00a0to \u00a0establish a <\/span>Another analyst, t\u00a0Joint \u00a0 Venture, <\/span>Vivek Rae, former director general procurement of the Indian Defence\u00a0Ministry, of \u00a0 Defence \u00a0<\/span>said, “HAL has set up [jont ventures] JV in the past. Their experience needs to be evaluated. What are the lessons learnt from past experience? Since management control will remain with HAL, it is unlikely that BAE will part with its intellectual property, except at high cost.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combat Hawk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed Combat\u00a0Hawk, which is still in the study stage, could be\u00a0\u00a0and \u00a0named “Dream Hawk” \u00a0is \u00a0proposed to be <\/span>fitted with the advanced short-range air-to-air\u00a0missile (ASRAAM) <\/span>and the Brimstone,\u00a0an air-launched ground attack missile to be supplied by MBDA of France. The aircraft will be used to coordinate for on strike coordinated <\/span>armed reconnaissance (SCAR) <\/span>and for close air support (CAS) <\/span>missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A HAL source \u00a0in \u00a0 HAL \u00a0<\/span>said his company has been exploring how to provide\u00a0future possibilities to provide\u00a0explore providing <\/span>service support for Hawk trainer and Jaguar aircraft and to jointly produce Combat Hawk for the worldwide market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are aiming to set up a joint venture for this purpose,” he said,\u00a0but he <\/span>gave no timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently HAL is license-producing 123 Hawk trainers in Bangalore and wants to use the assembly line to co-produce the Combat Hawk trainer,\u00a0the source added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
