The fighters will be on display as Ger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BERLIN \u2015 Eurofighter officials are downplaying the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/04\/23\/lockheed-us-air-force-mount-f-35-sales-pitch-at-berlin-air-show\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> F-35 fighter\u2032s<\/a> stealth capability at the Berlin Air Show, positing that the consortium\u2019s non-stealthy Typhoon still beats out the American competition in the race to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/04\/11\/german-tornados-still-struggling-with-night-ops\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Germany\u2019s Tornado fleet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStealth is only 10 percent of the capability mix,\u201d Eurofighter marketing chief Raffael Klaschke told Defense News on Wednesday. \u201cWe\u2019re still better at the other 90 percent,\u201d he argued, referring to the aircraft\u2019s combat capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the company could rest easy with the German Defence Ministry\u2019s recent proclamation that the Eurofighter is the preferred path for the upcoming multibillion-dollar Tornado-replacement program, Lockheed Martin\u2019s massive showing at the air show may have some officials nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eurofighter CEO Volker Paltzo doubled down on the argument that the Typhoon would guarantee continued vibrancy in the European military aircraft market. \u201cI want to underscore that every euro spent on Eurofighter within Europe stays in Europe,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Executives also stressed that the European aircraft would come free of any \u201cblack boxes,\u201d a reference to the expectation that all technological and operational details would be owned by Europeans, which may not be the case with the F-35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">F-35 advocates have touted the fifth-generation aircraft\u2019s stealth and other advanced capabilities for deep-strike and standoff combat, and there are some in Germany, especially in the Air Force, who believe that European technology simply cannot compare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, whatever follow-on aircraft Berlin chooses for its 90-strong Tornado fleet is only expected to be a bridge toward a brand-new development, raising the question of whether a costly acquisition of the U.S. planes would be a worthwhile investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Klaschke described stealth as a \u201cniche capability,\u201d adding with a nod to the F-35\u2032s competition: \u201cWe\u2019re not scared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials were less willing to discuss the expected nuclear-weapons capability of the Eurofighter, which it would pick up from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/2018\/04\/13\/germany-fears-steeper-tornado-costs-after-the-uk-ditches-its-planes\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">the Tornado<\/a>.
