{"id":35619,"date":"2022-02-15T00:43:34","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T00:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/02\/15\/us-and-uk-sign-cooperation-agreement-for-future-vertical-lift-programs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:54:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:54:28","slug":"us-and-uk-sign-cooperation-agreement-for-future-vertical-lift-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2022\/02\/15\/us-and-uk-sign-cooperation-agreement-for-future-vertical-lift-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"US and UK sign cooperation agreement for future vertical lift programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. on Monday signed an agreement with the United Kingdom to assess<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/defense-news-conference\/2020\/09\/10\/international-militaries-are-keeping-an-eye-on-the-us-armys-future-vertical-lift-program\/\" target=\"_blank\"> the possibility<\/a> of cooperation on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/03\/31\/us-army-enters-final-phase-of-development-before-kicking-off-future-long-range-assault-aircraft-program\/\" target=\"_blank\"> future vertical lift <\/a>programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army leaders from both countries agreed to a \u201cFuture Vertical Lift Cooperative Program Feasibility Assessment project arrangement\u201d to work together to \u201censure interoperability between the two nations\u2019 future rotorcraft aviation forces,\u201d according to a statement from U.S. Army Futures Command, which is in charge of advancing Army modernization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/10\/06\/report-us-army-can-field-two-new-vertical-lift-aircraft-if-service-lives-within-its-means\/\" target=\"_blank\">aggressively pursuing FVL programs<\/a> including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/03\/31\/us-army-enters-final-phase-of-development-before-kicking-off-future-long-range-assault-aircraft-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA)<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/08\/26\/us-army-has-flexibility-in-its-path-to-a-future-attack-recon-aircraft-program-leaders-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/08\/24\/army-awards-air-launched-effects-contracts-for-future-helicopters\/\" target=\"_blank\">Air-Launched Effects (ALE)<\/a> while also pursuing a modular open systems architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is poised to choose between Bell and a team of Lockheed Martin-owned Sikorsky and Boeing to build FLRAA this year. And Bell and Lockheed are again competing to build FARA prototypes expected to fly in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. and U.K. have a long history of partnership and cooperation in Army aviation, and the FVL project arrangement is an important step in expanding that relationship into the next generation of vertical lift capability and employment in future coalition operations,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the agreement, the countries will share future aircraft requirements and program plans and \u201cexplore and analyze new concepts for the employment of coalition air power in the lower tier air domain, the air space where Army aviation typically operates,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis will include opportunities to reduce cost, schedule and performance risk of FVL programs and will identify and improve areas where U.S. and U.K. rotorcraft can be interoperable or integrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two countries will also look for areas where cooperation could enhance research, development, test and evaluation; production; sustainment; and follow-on development efforts, according to the statement. The analysis will consider risks associated with working together across the life cycle of the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The information gathered will be part of the national decision-making process, the statement noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement will also include development of plans for the U.K. to cooperate in future phases of the U.S. Defense Department\u2019s FVL program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army has conducted two rounds of a campaign of learning dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/defense-news-conference\/2020\/09\/10\/army-conducting-digital-louisiana-maneuvers-in-arizona-desert\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Convergence at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona<\/a>, including a joint experiment last fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the service plans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/defense-news-conference\/2021\/09\/09\/project-convergence-22-seeks-to-take-multinational-network-to-next-level\/\" target=\"_blank\">to incorporate allied nations<\/a> \u2014 including the U.K. \u2014 into the massive joint experiment with a major emphasis on future vertical lift capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cArrangements like these will ultimately improve our capabilities and strengthen our forces, focusing on joint lethality, survivability and reach, while ensuring affordability for both our countries\u201a\u201d U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Wally Rugen, who oversees Army FVL modernization, said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur deep science and technology collaboration is an important element of this and makes us both more competitive,\u201d Maj.
