Rand Paul, R-Ky., was rejected on a 30-67 vote. It\u2019s the latest skirmish in Congress over U.S. sales of weapons to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saudi Arabia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/01\/26\/us-exploring-new-bases-in-saudi-arabia-amid-iran-tensions\/\" target=\"_blank\">one of America\u2019s most steadfast allies<\/a> in an unstable region of the globe. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/18\/senators-want-to-know-if-us-military-advisers-in-yemen-are-helping-or-hurting-the-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\">the country\u2019s leading role in a civil war<\/a> in nearby Yemen, which has blocked the flow of basic necessities like fuel, food and medicine, has tested the strength of that bond. Also contributing to bilateral tension is the West\u2019s assessment that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman played a role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2018\/10\/10\/us-senators-order-magnitsky-probe-as-riyadhs-capitol-hill-clout-plummets\/\" target=\"_blank\">assassination of U.S.-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi<\/a>, which the leader denies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe could stop this war if we really had the will to do it,\u201d Paul said on the Senate floor. \u201cAll of America should be appalled at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/12\/13\/bucking-trump-us-senate-oks-historic-yemen-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\">humanitarian disaster<\/a> caused by the Saudi blockade of Yemen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those joining Paul in seeking to stop the arms sale were Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, as well as liberals like Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Patty Murray of Washington. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States must do everything in our power to bring this brutal and horrific war to an end,\u201d Sanders said from the Senate floor. \u201cExporting more missiles to Saudi Arabia does nothing but further this conflict and pour more gasoline on [an] already raging fire.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t the first time a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers has tried to block the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia. Congress repeatedly tried to stop former Donald Trump from selling billions worth of arms to the country \u2014 forcing the then-president to issue a handful of vetoes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden himself pledged on the campaign trail in November 2019 to make the Saudis \u201cpariahs\u201d while vowing that he was \u201cnot going to, in fact, sell more weapons to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But since his election in 2020, Biden has take a different tack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, the administration decried efforts to block the sale, arguing such action would \u201cundermine the President\u2019s commitment to aid in our partner\u2019s defenses at a time of increased missile and drone attacks against civilians in Saudi Arabia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who supports the arms sale, said blocking it would further diminish U.S. influence in the world. He also argued that countries like Russia or China would step into the void and provide the weapons, rendering the gesture meaningless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt would give the world yet another reason to doubt the resolve of the United States and it would give our biggest adversaries a new foothold to exert their influence over a rapidly changing and important
