(Alan Lessig\/staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Douglas is scheduled to complete the handover with Gray toward the end of the year to become chief of defense materiel, the MoD said in a statement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said Douglas &#8220;<span style=\"color: #212121;\">brings a wealth of international experience and expertise in project and programme management, organisational leadership and business strategy, which will prove invaluable for the future of DE&amp;S and defence as a whole.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked last year by a national newspaper what motivates him, Douglas responded, &#8220;I like a challenge, I like complexity, I like it when people say &#8216;you can&#8217;t do that&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many executives and analysts here might say that would perfectly sum up the challenge facing him at DE&#038;S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gray is being replaced after he failed to secure a second term as head of the DE&#038;S <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">defense equipment and support <\/span>organization, having been initially appointed to the post in January 2011. In February he agreed to stay on until the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DE&#038;S is part way through a major transformation in an effort to improve performance.The organization, which <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">currently <\/span>employs about 12,000 people, became a trading entity within the MoD last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change in status gives the organization greater freedom to run its activities, particularly over issues like pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gray recently appointed teams from Bechtel and CH2M Hill to provide project and other expertise to the procurement organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Email: <span><a
