I think you have areas of emphasis for the next two years,&#8221; Thornberry said. &#8220;Our job is not to manage the day-to-day tactical use of the military. It&#8217;s to help provide the capability that the military needs to deal with the huge array of threats in the picture.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked if there are specific Pentagon programs on which he intends to focus, the incoming chairman replied: &#8220;You&#8217;d like to say all of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Of course there have to be areas of emphasis,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But, right now, you got to worry about getting organized and basic kinds of stuff. Probably in January we&#8217;ll talk more about moving forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the virtual lock to chair the Senate Armed Services Committee, lists as his top priority dealing with the remaining seven years of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=2014311120062\">across-the-board military spending cuts. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thornberry also bluntly said the &#8220;Armed Services Committee cannot solve that issue&#8221; when asked about addressing the Pentagon&#8217;s remaining portion of sequestration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Working with others, we&#8217;re going to do our best to try and solve it,&#8221; Thornberry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McCain also has made clear he believes the House and Senate Armed Services committees should have a role to play in any efforts to craft a use of military force measure for the Islamic State conflict or to revise the post-9\/11 AUMF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaders of the House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations committees, however, insist that work falls under their collective jurisdiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to argue with the parliamentarians,&#8221; Thornberry said. &#8220;Obviously, it&#8217;s important to us.&#8221;
