{"id":36217,"date":"2025-07-21T20:11:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T20:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/07\/21\/air-force-reviewing-b-52s-apparent-near-miss-with-airliner\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:23:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:23:48","slug":"air-force-reviewing-b-52s-apparent-near-miss-with-airliner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2025\/07\/21\/air-force-reviewing-b-52s-apparent-near-miss-with-airliner\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force reviewing B-52\u2019s apparent near miss with airliner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Air Force and commercial airline SkyWest Airlines are trying to learn more about a July 18 incident in which a North Dakota-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2024\/02\/20\/tinker-air-force-base-readies-for-b-52-upgrades-as-engines-tested\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2024\/02\/20\/tinker-air-force-base-readies-for-b-52-upgrades-as-engines-tested\/\">B-52 Stratofortress<\/a> may have had a near miss with a passenger plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SkyWest said in a statement to Air Force Times that its flight 3788 was flying from Minneapolis to Minot, North Dakota, on Friday evening. Air traffic controllers cleared flight 3788 to approach Minot International Airport for a landing when \u201canother aircraft became visible in their flight path,\u201d SkyWest said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commercial plane aborted the landing and circled above the airport, before landing safely at the airport, the airline\u2019s statement said. SkyWest said the company is now investigating the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Air Force spokesperson confirmed a B-52 from Minot Air Force Base held a flyover of the North Dakota State Fair that evening, but stopped short of confirming the near miss happened or saying an investigation was underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are aware of the recent reporting regarding commercial and Air Force aircraft operating in airspace around Minot International Airport,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cWe are currently looking into the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=71f80e9d-24a1-41bf-b034-d4d933744cc2\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-71f80e9d-24a1-41bf-b034-d4d933744cc2.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A commercial airline pilot flying over North Dakota told passengers he made an &#8216;aggressive maneuver&#8217; to avoid a military aircraft Friday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A video of the aftermath, recorded by a passenger identified as Monica Green and later circulated by multiple news outlets, shows the pilot explaining to passengers over the plane\u2019s intercom system what had just happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe [the air traffic controller] said turn right,\u201d the pilot can be heard saying. \u201cI said, \u2018There\u2019s an airplane over there.\u2019 And he says, turn left.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s when the pilot saw the other airplane \u201cwas kind of coming on a converging course with us,\u201d he told passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pilot said the other plane was a military aircraft that was flying \u201ca lot faster than us,\u201d and \u201cI felt it was the safest thing to do, to turn behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSorry about the aggressive maneuver,\u201d the pilot said. \u201cIt caught me by surprise. This is not normal at all. \u2026 Long story short, it was not fun, but I do apologize for it, and thank you for understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passengers can be heard applauding after the pilot concluded by saying, \u201cNot a fun day at work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/21\/us\/skywest-flight-collision-b52-north-dakota.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/21\/us\/skywest-flight-collision-b52-north-dakota.html\">New York Times<\/a> reported that Green said the plane veered dramatically to the right, so sharply that she was looking at cornfields out of the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times also reported that the pilot wondered why Minot Air Force Base \u201cdidn\u2019t give us a heads up,\u201d and \u201cnobody said, \u2018Hey, there\u2019s also a B-52 in the pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This near miss occurred six months after a deadly midair collision over the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, involving an Army Black Hawk helicopter and a passenger aircraft, which killed 67 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on May 1, just a few months after that fatal crash, another Army Black Hawk\u2019s path in the D.C. airspace forced two passenger jets to change course and fly around
