{"id":36381,"date":"2018-04-09T02:15:13","date_gmt":"2018-04-09T02:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/09\/how-stealthy-is-boeings-new-super-hornet\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:56:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:56:08","slug":"how-stealthy-is-boeings-new-super-hornet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2018\/04\/09\/how-stealthy-is-boeings-new-super-hornet\/","title":{"rendered":"How stealthy is Boeing\u2019s new Super Hornet?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2018\/04\/04\/boeing-super-hornet-program-gets-second-life-through-future-sales-and-upgrades\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Block III Super Hornet<\/a> is getting a marginal increase in stealth capability, but if you\u2019re expecting the invisible aircraft of President Donald Trump\u2019s dreams, think again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2016\/12\/22\/trump-tells-twitter-he-wants-a-super-hornet-with-f-35-capabilities\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Building a \u201cstealthy\u201d Super Hornet<\/a> has been one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/air-warfare-symposium\/2017\/02\/17\/trump-flirting-with-big-super-hornet-order\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Trump\u2019s talking points<\/a> since he was elected to the presidency. During a March trip to Boeing\u2019s plant in St. Louis, he claimed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/02\/08\/trump-wants-24-new-super-hornets-reversing-obama-policy\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. military would buy Super Hornets<\/a> with \u201cthe latest and the greatest stealth and a lot of things on that plane that people don\u2019t even know about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump was referring to one of the Super Hornet\u2019s Block III upgrades slated to be incorporated on jets rolling off the production line in 2020: the application of radar absorbent materials or RAM, also known as stealth coating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But far from being \u201cthe latest and greatest,\u201d the company has already used the exact same materials on the on the Block II Super Hornet to help decrease the chances of radar detection, said Dan Gillian, who manages Boeing\u2019s F\/A-18E\/F Super Hornet and E\/A-18G Growler programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Block III jets will get \u201ca little more\u201d of that coating applied to them, \u201cand in a few different areas to buy a little bit more performance,\u201d Gillian told Defense News in a March interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All in all, those improvements will reduce the aircraft\u2019s radar cross section by about 10 percent, and with very low risk, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the general public tends to think of stealth like the invisibility cloak from Harry Potter or Wonder Woman\u2019s invisible plane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/08\/02\/stealth-technology-gap-narrows-but-us-air-forces-experience-could-give-it-an-edge\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">stealth is more of a continuum<\/a> that is enabled and affected by many factors, experts told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a Romulan cloaking device,\u201d said Richard Aboulafia, a Teal Group aviation analyst, referencing a technology from Star Trek that allowed spaceships to be invisible to the naked eye and electro-optical sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s about reducing the likelihood that an adversary will see you first. And seconds count, so if it buys a little extra time, then it helps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important contributors to low observability are the aircraft\u2019s shape and the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/03\/06\/stealth-features-responsible-for-half-of-f-35-defects-lockheed-program-head-states\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">LO coatings<\/a>, with airframe shape commonly seen as twice as important as the coatings, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stealth fighters from the oddly angled F-117 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/05\/22\/lockheed-pitches-new-f-22-mods-to-boost-the-life-of-its-stealth-coating\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">F-22<\/a> and F-35, with their rounded edges, were all designed to bounce radar waves away from an aircraft, sometimes at the expense of aerodynamic performance or other attributes, said Brian Laslie, an Air Force historian and author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That being said, the Super Hornet, with it\u2019s external stores and pylons, is not going to replicate the low observability of the joint strike fighter, which was designed from the beginning with stealth in mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut just because it\u2019s not a pure LO aircraft doesn\u2019t mean that the designers weren\u2019t concerned with the radar return,\u201d said Laslie, who added that it\u2019s \u201creasonable\u201d to expect a 10 percent decrease to the aircraft\u2019s signature by augmenting Block III jets with additional RAM coating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shining a spotlight on the Super Hornet\u2019s low observable attributes may have helped sell Trump on future orders, Aboulafia speculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt might be useful in the real world too, but in a much more marginal way,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4174576.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-77859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4174576.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4174576.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4174576.jpg.jpg?resize=768,431 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4174576.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,575 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An F\/A-18E Super Hornet assigned to the \u201cKestrels\u201d of Strike Fighter Squadron VFA 137 prepares to make an arrested landing aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier Carl Vinson. An aircraft can be more or less easily detected by radar depending on how it is positioned or the route used by the plane, so having more radar-absorbing materials on the Super Hornet could give the pilot more options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think what the Navy is doing is trying to maybe reduce enough of the cross section of the F-18 in high intensity combat scenarios,\u201d Laslie said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019re trying to make the F\/A-18 a stealth aircraft,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut if they can reduce the radar cross section enough that in certain scenarios it is more difficult to pick the Super Hornet up, that would be of benefit to the Navy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the president has done much to focus public attention on the Super Hornet\u2019s upcoming LO upgrade, the Block III actually offers a relatively modest increase in stealth compared to earlier concepts floated by Boeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2013, when the company began evaluating how to attract future sales from the Navy as production slowed, it started promoting an \u201cAdvanced Super Hornet\u201d configuration that would have improved the aircraft\u2019s signature by 50 percent. That version of the jet included structural enhancements and an enclosed weapons pod, but Boeing ultimately stepped away from that concept. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose big compromises you have to make to get the higher levels of stealth like putting your weapons in a bay, we don\u2019t think that\u2019s a necessary part of the Block III story for the Super Hornet,\u201d Gillian said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Donald Trump promised the &#8220;latest and greatest&#8221; stealth tech.
