Squad Mobility Equipment Transport<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its recent acquisition of Howe &amp; Howe Technologies, Textron finds itself a player in the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/10\/these-two-army-bcts-will-be-the-first-to-put-robotic-vehicles-in-their-formations\/\" target=_blank>Squad Mobility Equipment Transport competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2019\/01\/10\/textron-finalizes-acquisition-of-robotics-company\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Howe-Howe-Technologies.PNG.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Textron finalizes acquisition of robotics company<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The merger gives Textron a boost in the unmanned land vehicle market.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army wants to buy a robotic equipment carrier that troops can load with their gear, and Howe &amp; Howe\u2019s tracked RS2-H1 robot is competing alongside three other companies for the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe believe that program will progress this year, and we look forward to moving that to low-rate production,\u201d Atherton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other competitors undergoing tests with the Army and Marine Corps are the Polaris MRZR X, a four-wheeled vehicle based on the Polaris MRZR currently in service with the Marines; the General Dynamics four-wheel drive Multi-Utility Tactical Transport; and the six-wheeled HDT Global Hunter WOLF, or Wheeled Offload Logistics Follower, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/05\/27\/one-of-these-four-robot-vehicles-could-take-the-load-off-army-squads\/\" target=_blank>Army Times reported last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1778\" height=\"1354\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/original.jpg_2d1564.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/original.jpg_2d1564.jpg 1778w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/original.jpg_2d1564.jpg?resize=300,228 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/original.jpg_2d1564.jpg?resize=768,585 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/original.jpg_2d1564.jpg?resize=1024,780 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/original.jpg_2d1564.jpg?resize=1536,1170 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1778px) 100vw, 1778px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The RS2-H1 system from Howe &#038; Howe Technologies, top left; the Hunter Wolf system from HDT Global, top right; the MRZR-X system from Polaris Industries, Applied Research Associates and Neya Systems, bottom left; and the Multi-Utility Tactical Transport, or MUTT, from General Dynamics Land Systems, bottom right. (U.S. Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each company delivered prototypes to two Army infantry brigade combat teams and a Marine Corps unit for tests last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey asked us to deliver eight vehicles and then just give them to the soldiers and let the soldiers do what they will with them and basically try to break them,\u201d Atherton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vehicles have now come back to Textron in good working condition, which Atherton said is a \u201ctestament to the robustness of that capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a year of tests, the Army will make a decision on the way forward with the program, which could involve a downselect to a single SMET provider, Army Times has reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>2. Robotic combat vehicle<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Army looks to replace the Bradley Fighting Vehicle with what the service is calling the Next Generation Combat Vehicle, it is also hoping to develop an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/06\/28\/from-a-bradley-replacement-to-soldier-controlled-robot-swarms-big-moves-coming-with-army-robots\/\" target=\"_blank\">unmanned tank that can accompany it into battle<\/a> as a robotic \u201cwingman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, Textron\u2019s acquisition of Howe &amp; Howe gives the company an entry point into the competition, Atherton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe believe that the Ripsaw is tailor-made for that,\u201d she said, referring to the light unmanned tank developed by Howe &amp; Howe. \u201cSo this year we will be focused on responding to the [requests for proposals] that come out for the prototypes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ripsaw\u2019s appearance on the show \u201cJay Leno\u2019s Garage\u201d attracted Atherton\u2019s attention to Howe &amp; Howe and laid the foundation for the company\u2019s eventual acquisition. The robotic tank has been featured in numerous TV and movie spots, including the film \u201cMad Max: Fury Road.\u201d The Army previously tested it at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atherton said Textron will make investments to improve the survivability of Ripsaw, as well as add \u201cother innovations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brig. Gen. David Lesperance, who is leading the NGCV Cross-Functional Team, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/03\/16\/first-next-gen-combat-vehicle-and-robotic-wingman-prototypes-to-emerge-in-2020\/\" target=_blank>said in March that both NGCV and robot combat vehicle<\/a> prototypes will be ready for soldier evaluations by 2020, with follow-on prototypes ready by 2022 and 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>3. Future tactical unmanned aerial system<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Army looks to replace its RQ-7 Shadow drones, it\u2019s testing a number of small, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2018\/10\/10\/army-seeks-new-tactical-unmanned-aircraft-for-demo-testing-in-brigade-combat-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\">nondevelopmental unmanned aerial systems<\/a> with the hopes of buying something off the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of that effort, Textron was chosen to demonstrate Aerosonde HQ at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, last month, Atherton said. Aerosonde HQ is a version of Textron\u2019s small Aerosonde UAS and includes a kit that allows it to take off and land vertically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur team widely exceeded the threshold requirements,\u201d she said. \u201cSo we\u2019re very proud of what we were able to do: very rapidly integrate those techniques and procedures and technologies into the Aerosonde to be able to provide that to the Army for the future tactical UAS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>4. Next Generation Squad Weapons<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Textron also believes it has strong offerings for the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/09\/major-changes-for-small-arms-are-on-the-way-with-the-armys-saw-replacement\/\" target=_blank>Next Generation Squad Weapons effort<\/a>, an umbrella program to replace soldiers\u2019 small arms, Atherton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing the weight of small arms is a major goal of the program, and Textron previously developed case-telescoped weapons it claims are lighter in weight and more lethal than current weaponry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe believe we are the leaders in the case-telescoped prototypes for the Army\u2019s next-generation squad weapon with our lightweight small arms technologies,\u201d Atherton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company showcased a 5.56mm light machine gun variant and a 6.5mm caseless service rifle variant at the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual meeting in 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/05\/the-armys-saw-and-m4-replacements-will-both-fire-this-more-accurate-and-deadly-round\/\" target=_blank>Army Times reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service has awarded contracts to Textron; FN America, LLC; General Dynamics; PCP Tactical; and Sig Sauer to build prototypes of a Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle, or NGSAR. The prototypes are due to be delivered this year. That weapon would replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, which fires 5.56mm rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program also seeks to find a replacement for the M4, which it calls the Next Generation Squad Weapon Rifle, or NGSW-Rifle.
