SIMI VALLEY, Calif \u2013 While laying out a tease of President Donald Trump\u2019s new National Security Strategy, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, the president\u2019s national security advisor, warned that \u201cthere\u2019s not much time left\u201d to deal with the threat from North Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McMaster, speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum, identified North Korea as the greatest threat to the United States, adding that it is \u201cincreasing every day\u201d and saying North Korean Kim Jong Un is \u201cgetting closer and closer\u201d to having a full nuclear deterrent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McMaster also reiterated that the administration still seeks denuclearization from Pyongyang as the end goal, something experts warn is no longer possible following a year of ICBM tests that have shown greater and greater range, with the most recent launch<\/a> having come Nov. 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier Saturday, CNN reported that the latest launch broke up upon re-entry into earth\u2019s atmosphere, which would indicate flaws remain for North Korea to overcome before it would be able to place a nuclear weapon into the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More broadly, McMaster used his speech to offer a small preview of the administration\u2019s\u2019 upcoming National Security Strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n

The core of the NSS will be on \u201creclaiming American\u2019s strategic confidence,\u201d a phrase McMaster used several times during his speech. He identified four key components to the strategy — \u201cfocus on protecting our homeland, advancing American prosperity, preserving peace through strength and, finally enhancing American influence\u201d \u2013 but few specifics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among other topics covered by the three-star general: that arming Ukraine remains the policy of the administration, that some countries have \u201ccheated\u201d America on trade deals that will now be renegotiated, that it is \u201cvery hard\u201d to see a future Syria including Bashar al-Assad, and that he supports sanctions against Russia, saying that are \u201crelevant to countering Russia\u2019s destabilizing behavior and we\u2019re moving out on that as fast as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
