{"id":37407,"date":"2018-01-24T19:22:45","date_gmt":"2018-01-24T19:22:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/01\/24\/wanted-iron-man-suits-for-special-operations-troops\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T07:15:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T07:15:37","slug":"wanted-iron-man-suits-for-special-operations-troops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2018\/01\/24\/wanted-iron-man-suits-for-special-operations-troops\/","title":{"rendered":"Wanted: \u2018Iron Man\u2019 suits for special operations troops"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Special Operations Command is once again seeking proposals for a Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit, or TALOS, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbo.gov\/index?s=opportunity&amp;mode=form&amp;id=dba7fa09e67a18020c09786285fabe71&amp;tab=core&amp;_cview=0\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover218262\">broad agency announcement <\/a>posted in December. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commonly dubbed an \u201cIron Man\u201d suit, the announcement highlights TALOS\u2019 role as part of a \u201clong-term goal to develop technologies which can enhance SOF mission execution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe intent is to accelerate the delivery of innovative capabilities to the SOF operator,\u201d the announcement, which will remain open through December, states. \u201cTALOS is an overarching vision to drastically improve the dismounted operator\u2019s survivability and capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t the first time the request has been pushed out, though. Back in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/113332\/iron_man_style_suit_in_early_stages_of_development\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover386067\" style=\"\">September 2013<\/a>, SOCOM made another broad agency announcement seeking TALOS suit prototypes, according to an Army news release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe sometimes refer to it as the Iron Man suit, frankly to attract the attention, imagination and excitement of industry and academia,\u201d Michel Fieldson, then the TALOS lead, said in the release. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this most recent announcement, the solicitation includes interest areas for contractors to focus on \u2014 such as technologies that minimize traumatic brain injury, reduce electromagnetic and acoustic signature, and protect against advanced rifle rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe vision provides a coordinating focus for many of [SOCOM\u2019s] Science and Technology (S&amp;T) efforts,\u201d the announcement reads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tactical exoskeleton system outlined in the solicitation should be able to augment human strength, while maintaining operator mobility under heavy loads in an austere environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe capability areas include enhanced warfighter protection, improved situational awareness, increased mobility, advancements in battlefield power generation and storage, and modernized ground force communication and control,\u201d the announcement reads. \u201cEach capability is approached holistically to ensure system-level operational effectiveness for the SOF operator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other areas of interest include a user-interface that can provide microwave doppler imaging, as well as the ability to capture sounds 360 degrees around the operator\u2019s viewpoint and display the sound\u2019s origin in azimuth and elevation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to power this behemoth, SOCOM is hoping for a backpack-sized battery \u201ccapable of providing up to several kilowatts of clean DC power for multiple hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any power source submitted \u201cshould be less than 120VDC and not to exceed 600VDC, although short-term load peaks above this level are possible,\u201d the announcement notes. \u201cThese technologies are necessary to provide an uninterrupted source of power to an untethered SOF operator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As far as who can submit proposals, the announcement reads that SOCOM is \u201cinterested in receiving concepts from all responsible sources from industry, academia, individuals, and government organizations capable of providing the design, development, and testing of TALOS-related technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although it\u2019s up to a would-be contractor to determine costs and timeline of development, the announcement recommends
