{"id":37428,"date":"2020-06-24T15:55:39","date_gmt":"2020-06-24T15:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/06\/24\/the-f-35-lightning-ii-cant-fly-in-lightning-once-again\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:05:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:05:48","slug":"the-f-35-lightning-ii-cant-fly-in-lightning-once-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2020\/06\/24\/the-f-35-lightning-ii-cant-fly-in-lightning-once-again\/","title":{"rendered":"The F-35 Lightning II can\u2019t fly in lightning once again"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The most widely used variant of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2020\/06\/23\/house-committee-targets-lockheed-in-probe-of-f-35-parts-problems\/\" target=_blank>F-35 Joint Strike Fighter <\/a>is currently unable to fly in thunderstorms after the discovery of damage to one of the systems it uses to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/08\/30\/f-35b-lightning-iis-need-protection-from-lightning\/\" target=_blank>protect itself from lightning<\/a>, its prime contractor Lockheed Martin said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To safely fly in conditions where lightning is present, the F-35 relies on its Onboard Inert Gas Generation System, or OBIGGS, which pumps nitrogen-enriched air into the fuel tanks to inert them. Without this system, a jet could explode if struck by lightning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, damage to one of the tubes that distributes inert gas into the fuel tank was discovered during routine depot maintenance of an F-35A at Hill Air Force Base\u2019s Ogden Logistics Complex in Utah, Lockheed said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/breaking-news\/2020\/05\/19\/lockheed-to-slow-f-35-production-as-supply-chain-struggles-to-keep-up\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2173960.jpg_feeaf5.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lockheed slated to miss F-35 delivery target in 2020 as supply chain struggles to keep up<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lockheed Martin is under contract to deliver 141 F-35 jets this year. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, it&#039;s unclear whether that will happen.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed temporarily paused F-35 deliveries June 2-23 as the company validated whether it was properly installing OBIGGS systems. However, \u201cit appears this anomaly is occurring in the field after aircraft delivery,\u201d Lockheed said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed has since delivered two F-35s, company spokesman Brett Ashworth said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it cannot be confirmed that the OBIGGS system would function properly if the jet was hit by lightning, the F-35 Joint Program Office has opted to institute flight restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a safety precaution, the JPO recommended to unit commanders that they implement a lightning flight restriction for the F-35A, which restricts flying within 25 miles of lightning or thunderstorms,\u201d Lockheed said. \u201cWe are working with the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) on a root cause corrective action investigation to determine next steps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue only seems to affect the F-35A conventional-takeoff-and-landing variant, which is used by the U.S. Air Force and the majority of international customers. The OBIGGS design is slightly different on the F-35B short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing variant due to the aircraft\u2019s lift fan, and the problem has not been observed on F-35C carrier-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, Ashworth said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bloomberg, which obtained a JPO memo dated June 5, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-24\/f-35-jet-deliveries-were-paused-for-fix-to-avert-fuel-explosions\" target=_blank>reported <\/a>that flawed tubes were found in 14 of the 24 \u201cA\u201d models inspected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JPO did not respond immediately to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a plane nicknamed \u201cLightning II,\u201d the F-35\u2032s lightning protection systems have, ironically, become an embarrassing problem issue for the jet at times throughout its development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35 was prohibited from flying within 25 miles of lightning in the early 2010s after the Pentagon\u2019s weapons tester discovered deficiencies with the original OBIGGs system in getting enough inert gas into the fuel tanks.
