{"id":37729,"date":"2020-11-06T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-06T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/11\/06\/estonian-robotics-company-makes-inroads-with-european-armies\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:26:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:26:47","slug":"estonian-robotics-company-makes-inroads-with-european-armies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/2020\/11\/06\/estonian-robotics-company-makes-inroads-with-european-armies\/","title":{"rendered":"Estonian robotics company makes inroads with European armies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COLOGNE, Germany \u2014 Italy has become the latest country to show interest in Estonian robotics firm Milrem\u2019s THeMIS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/08\/02\/these-baltic-nations-could-build-europes-next-ground-drone\/\" target=_blank>ground vehicle<\/a>, as nations across Europe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2019\/09\/13\/getting-serious-about-armed-ground-robots\/\" target=_blank>continue to actively pursue<\/a> the unmanned systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photo distributed by Milrem shows the vehicle at an Italian Army base near Rome last month with its cargo hold folded wide open and the contents \u2014 a small surveillance drone made by Estonia\u2019s Threod Systems \u2014 hovering above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/2016\/11\/10\/technology-focus-drives-estonian-defense-industry-growth\/\" target=_blank>THeMIS vehicle<\/a>, which is short for Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System, is configurable for logistics, combat, reconnaissance or explosive ordnance disposal. In its basic version, it looks something like a cabriolet tank, roughly waist-high and piano-wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa-digital-show-dailies\/2018\/10\/09\/industry-nations-hope-to-cash-in-on-unmanned-ground-vehicle-growth\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AI_1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Industry, nations hope to cash in on unmanned ground vehicle growth<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Analysts see slow but steady growth in the market, while foreign nations may try to cash in.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The various combat setups include weaponry such as guns, anti-tank missiles or launchers for suicide drones mounted on top, according to Milrem\u2019s website. The company doesn\u2019t make its own arms, a spokesman told Defense News, but rather integrates weapons from other manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPulling the trigger is always done by the human,\u201d the spokesman said when asked about the vehicle\u2019s level of autonomy, adding that all weapon add-ons by third-party vendors are expected to abide by that rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demonstration in Italy follows a string of recent announcements by armed forces in Europe and elsewhere using the THeMIS platform for testing or operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This spring, the Estonian Defence Forces, or EDF, completed a yearlong deployment with the vehicle during the French-led Barkhane counterterrorism mission in Mali. The vehicle accompanied soldiers on patrol and ferried supplies around the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe collected a lot of valuable data and feedback during the deployment and although EDF\u2019s experience with the THeMIS was positive, there is always room for improvement,\u201d Kuldar Vaarsi, CEO of Milrem, was quoted as saying in a statement. \u201cHowever, after this experience in Mali, we are confident that the THeMIS is more than capable of supporting operations in extremely hot climates.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company previously said it was preparing to support another deployment with the country\u2019s forces at the end of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, the Netherlands signed a joined procurement agreement with the Estonian government to buy seven THeMIS vehicles from Milrem \u2014 four for the Royal Netherlands Army and three for Estonian forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Dutch, the purchase brings its inventory of the ground robots to six, with the two bought in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo far, the THeMIS has successfully been used for research and experiments by operational units of the 13 Light Brigade in Scotland, Germany, The Netherlands and during a live fire exercise in Austria,\u201d Lt. Col. Martijn Hadicke of the Royal Netherlands Army was quoted as saying in a company statement. \u201cThe addition of four extra THeMIS vehicles with a Remote Controlled Weapon System that is operated by a soldier provides us the opportunity to continue to develop concepts to enhance the combat power and decrease the risk for our soldiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with the most recent outreach to Italian forces, Milrem rolled out what it dubs the Intelligent Systems Implementation Analysis and Assessment program, a three-step process designed to offer governments new capability ideas for their military robotic needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program \u201cprovides armed forces support from initial planning to full implementation and post implementation analyses of intelligent and robotic systems with (NATO standard) concept development and experimentation methodologies,\u201d according to Juri Pajuste, a retired Estonian military officer who now leads Milrem\u2019s defense research and development efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company is already sitting pretty when it comes to charting a course for robotic ground vehicles under the auspices of the European Union. Milrem has positioned its THeMIS vehicle as the reference platform in a multinational program aimed at developing a common design architecture underpinning future developments in the growth
