President Donald Trump signed a new executive order on position, navigation and timing services Feb. 12, encouraging the development of a resilient PNT infrastructure that isn\u2019t exclusively reliant on the Global Positioning System of satellites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is the policy of the United States to ensure that disruption or manipulation of PNT services does not undermine the reliable and efficient functioning of its critical infrastructure,\u201d the executive order reads. \u201cThe Federal Government must increase the nation\u2019s awareness of the extent to which critical infrastructure depends on, or is enhanced by, PNT services, and it must ensure critical infrastructure can withstand disruption or manipulation of PNT services. To this end, the Federal Government shall engage the public and private sectors to identify and promote the responsible use of PNT services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GPS technology has become ubiquitous over the decades. Developed by the Air Force as a space-based source of PNT data for the military, the system has also enabled significant economic growth, including in such disparate areas as agriculture, telecommunications, financial services, weather forecasting, the electrical grid and much more. GPS has become so critical that a 30-day GPS outage could result in $35-45 billion in economic losses<\/a>, according to an RTI International report sponsored by the National Institute of Standards of Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the GPS signal has become a popular target for jamming and spoofing by adversaries hoping to take away the United States\u2019 information advantage. <\/p>\n\n\n\t
