{"id":38116,"date":"2020-02-20T19:42:26","date_gmt":"2020-02-20T19:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/02\/20\/how-many-users-were-affected-by-the-disa-breach\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:22:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:22:46","slug":"how-many-users-were-affected-by-the-disa-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2020\/02\/20\/how-many-users-were-affected-by-the-disa-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"How many users were affected by the DISA breach?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A breach of a system hosted by the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Department of Defense\u2019s primary IT support agency, affected \u201capproximately 200,000\u201d users after a malicious actor may have gained access to names and Social Security numbers, according to a Pentagon spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chuck Prichard, a DoD spokesman, said there is \u201cno evidence to suggest that any of the potentially compromised [personally identifiable information] was misused.\u201d DISA is sending letters notifying potentially affected users, in line with agency policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that affected individuals \u201cwill subsequently receive additional correspondence with information about actions that can be taken to mitigate possible negative impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news of the breach was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-defense-breach-idUSKBN20E27A\" target=_blank>first reported by Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prichard said the breach was discovered during summer 2019. According to Reuters, which viewed a copy of the letter sent out to DISA officials, the breach occurred between May and July 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Affected users will also receive free credit monitoring, Prichard said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prichard declined to specify what network was breached, only that it was hosted by DISA. He also declined to comment on how long the actor was in the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoD and DISA take the security of our people, information (or data) and operations very seriously and actively monitor potential threats,&#8221; Prichard said. \u201cFor operational security reasons, the department does not comment on the actions taken to mitigate risks or vulnerabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did add that \u201cDISA &#8230; conducted a thorough investigation of this incident and taken appropriate measures to secure the network.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to its website, DISA employs over 8,000 military and civilian employees. The agency\u2019s mission includes protecting the Department of Defense Information Network, a global DoD network used for sharing and storing information. DISA runs a variety of other systems, including combat support, DoD enterprise email and other communication networks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Affected users are receiving
