{"id":38635,"date":"2020-01-10T20:04:35","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T20:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/01\/10\/space-force-to-stand-up-a-doctrine-hub\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:02:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:02:13","slug":"space-force-to-stand-up-a-doctrine-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2020\/01\/10\/space-force-to-stand-up-a-doctrine-hub\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Force to stand up a doctrine hub"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Space Force is setting up a \u201cspace doctrine center\u201d where the brand-new American armed service can begin to hammer out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/12\/17\/congress-adopts-defense-bill-that-creates-space-force\/\" target=_blank>how to optimally operate in space<\/a>, the head of Space Operations Command said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2019\/12\/21\/may-the-space-force-be-with-you-heres-what-we-know-about-the-us-militarys-newest-service\/\" target=\"_blank\">was formally established on Dec. 20<\/a> as an independent military branch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/12\/20\/trumps-new-space-force-to-reside-under-department-of-the-air-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">inside the Department of the Air Force<\/a>. But much still needs to be done to get the fledgling service up on its feet, including laying out its organizational structure, creating a logo, potentially changing the name of bases and transferring airmen over to the Space Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the Air Force and Space Force have been working to fulfill these tasks, said Maj. Gen. John Shaw, who leads Space Operations Command and holds the title of U.S. Space Command\u2019s combined force space component commander. This is what would happen next.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have been authorized some billets for a space doctrine center, and we\u2019ll be holding a space doctrine conference in Colorado Springs next month,\u201d Shaw said at a Jan. 10 breakfast event. \u201cSo I think we\u2019re already thinking about how do we think about this anew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, just hours before President Donald Trump signed off on legislation that would codify the Space Force into law, Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett told reporters that her service had identified an initial planning cadre that would hammer out many of the major details needed to stand up the Space Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That plan includes 30-, 60- and 90-day goals, and Barrett herself is responsible for meeting one major, near-term deadline by Feb. 1, when a proposal for the initial structure of the Space Force is due to Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of that work is ongoing, Shaw said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re doing right now \u2014 even as we speak there are folks meeting in Colorado Springs trying to lay this all out \u2014 is figuring out how do we set up a United States Space Force,\u201d Shaw said. \u201cI\u2019ve been telling the team: \u2018Don\u2019t even think about a war-fighting service for the next decade or even the century. Create a war-fighting service for the 22nd century.\u2019 What is war fighting going to look [like] at the end of the century and into the next? We started with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m sure we didn\u2019t get it 100 percent right. We didn\u2019t have the time infinity stone that we could just jump into the future and come back,\u201d he said, referencing a jewel carried by Marvel superhero Doctor Strange that allows the wielder to manipulate time. \u201cBut our general feeling is it\u2019s going to be fast. War fighting is going to happen very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That principle should inform how the Space Force is organized, resulting in a lean, agile service that can quickly respond to threats, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaw also spoke about the opportunity to recruit young people who might be interested in space technology, but would otherwise not consider a career in the military. About a year ago, Shaw went to dinner with three \u201cnerdy\u201d aerospace engineering students from the University of Colorado Boulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll three of them said this: \u2018I would never join the military. But I would join the Space Force,\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cIf you extrapolate that out, there\u2019s something going on.
