Damien Pickart said. Those jets do not use drogue systems to refuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2021\/08\/09\/boeings-kc-46-can-now-use-its-refueling-boom-for-operational-missions\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6745682.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Boeing\u2019s KC-46 can now use its refueling boom for operational missions<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As of Aug. 5, the KC-46 is cleared to refuel the C-17, B-52 and KC-46 using its boom.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this approval will allow the Pegasus to take on more missions the Air Force otherwise would have had to hand off to the KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-10 Extender and lessen the burden on those older tankers, AMC said in a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe KC-46 can now support 62 percent of all receiver aircraft that request air refueling support from USTRANSCOM,\u201d said Brig. Gen. Ryan Samuelson, who is in charge of the KC-46 cross functional team, in the announcement. \u201cThis step forward accelerates the critical projection and connection warfighting requirements the Pegasus brings to the joint force, even before it\u2019s fully operational.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AMC Commander Gen. Mike Minihan on Wednesday signed off on the KC-46\u2032s latest approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AMC last hit such a milestone in August, when the KC-46 was approved to refuel the B-52 Stratofortress, C-17 Globemaster and other Pegasus aircraft using its refueling boom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the first interim capability release decision in July cleared the Pegasus to refuel aircraft using its centerline drogue system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force said it will continue to roll out additional expansions of the Pegasus\u2019 capabilities as its ICR process unfolds, though it would not say how long it might take. The plan focuses on \u201cestablishing incremental confidence measures\u201d that allow AMC\u2019s commander and other senior leaders to assess how the Pegasus is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pegasus has so far carried out more than 6,000 missions since January 2019. Over that period, it has refueled aircraft with more than 35 million pounds of fuel, and made about 26,000 boom and 1,500 drogue contacts with other aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pegasus has been working to resolve a series of technical problems throughout its troubled rollout. As of August, the aircraft had six Category 1 deficiencies, though the Air Force said it is working with Boeing to resolve some of these
