{"id":39124,"date":"2019-08-01T19:03:10","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T19:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/08\/01\/northrop-and-raytheon-to-compete-to-build-laser-weapon-for-short-range-air-defense\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:11:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:11:50","slug":"northrop-and-raytheon-to-compete-to-build-laser-weapon-for-short-range-air-defense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/08\/01\/northrop-and-raytheon-to-compete-to-build-laser-weapon-for-short-range-air-defense\/","title":{"rendered":"Northrop and Raytheon to compete to build laser weapon for short-range air defense"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army has awarded a contract each to Northrop Grumman and Raytheon to build a 50-kilowatt-class <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/03\/21\/us-army-successfully-demos-laser-weapon-on-stryker-in-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\">laser weapon for Stryker combat vehicles <\/a>for the Short-Range Air Defense (SHORAD) mission, according to an Aug. 1 statement from the service\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2019\/03\/26\/army-transforming-rco-to-tackle-and-quickly-field-complex-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two companies will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/02\/13\/us-army-could-get-laser-for-short-range-air-defense-in-under-five-years\/\" target=_blank>build their respective directed-energy weapons<\/a> as subcontractors to Kord Technologies. The Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office, or RCCTO, entered into a $203 million agreement with Kord under the OTA, or other transaction authority, contracting mechanism that is used to rapidly fund the production of prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract could increase to $490 million for the delivery of four prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the laser weapon systems developed through the OTA could be integrated onto a platoon of four Stryker vehicles in fiscal 2022. General Dynamics Land Systems \u2014 which produces the Stryker \u2014 will be the platform integrator for the system. Gen. L. Neil Thurgood, director of hypersonics, directed energy, space and rapid acquisition, said in a statement. \u201cThe Army recognizes the need for directed energy lasers as part of the Army\u2019s modernization plan. This is no longer a research effort or a demonstration effort. It is a strategic combat capability, and we are on the right path to get it in soldiers\u2019 hands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award marks progress toward the Army\u2019s new strategy for accelerating and fielding directed-energy weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M-SHORAD laser weapon prototypes are part of a technology maturation effort \u2014 the Multi-Mission High Energy Laser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also building a High Energy Laser Tactical Vehicle Demonstrator. after the U.S. Army Europe Command commander began beating the drum for the capability.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More powerful laser weapon systems will allow the services to protect against rockets, artillery, mortars and drones \u201cas well as more stressing threats,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army plans to deliver prototypes of approximately that power onto tactical vehicles for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2019\/03\/27\/army-debuts-new-missile-defense-strategy-to-address-emerging-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\">High Energy Laser Indirect Fire Protection Capability<\/a> to a platoon by FY24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy teaming with the other services and our industry partners, we will not only
