{"id":39243,"date":"2019-06-10T20:25:44","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T20:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/06\/10\/active-protection-systems-demo-hits-dead-end-for-stryker-army-evaluating-next-steps\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:05:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:05:35","slug":"active-protection-systems-demo-hits-dead-end-for-stryker-army-evaluating-next-steps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/06\/10\/active-protection-systems-demo-hits-dead-end-for-stryker-army-evaluating-next-steps\/","title":{"rendered":"Active protection systems demo hits dead end for Stryker; US Army evaluates next steps"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 After evaluating two active protection systems in a demonstration late last fall and determining neither were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/08\/20\/army-pursuing-possible-alternatives-for-a-stryker-based-active-protection-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">right fit for the Stryker,<\/a> the U.S. Army is now evaluating how to protect one of its critical combat vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnfortunately for Stryker, we have not found a system that is suitable for the platform,\u201d Col. Glenn Dean, Stryker project manager told Defense News, said in a June 7 interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has found interim APS for both its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2017\/10\/09\/europe-bound-army-to-urgently-field-abrams-tanks-with-trophy-active-protection-system\/\" target=_blank>Abrams tank<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/06\/19\/iron-fist-revealed-the-likely-interim-active-protection-system-for-bradley\/\" target=_blank>Bradley infantry fighting vehicle<\/a> but has struggled to find one for the Stryker. The service moved quickly to field combat vehicle protection against rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank-guided missiles while it develops a future system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service originally considered Herndon,Virginia-based Artis Corporation\u2019s Iron Curtain APS for the Stryker, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/08\/24\/iron-curtain-is-out-as-possible-active-protection-system-for-stryker\/\" target=_blank>decided in August 2018<\/a> not to move forward in fielding it to Stryker units.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/08\/20\/army-pursuing-possible-alternatives-for-a-stryker-based-active-protection-system\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/StrykerIronCurtain.jpg_7f41f8.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army pursues alternatives for a Stryker-based active protection system<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Selected companies will come forward this year to demonstrate additional active protection system options for U.S. Army combat vehicles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an effort to expand its search for an appropriate system, the Army then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2018\/10\/08\/heres-who-is-participating-in-the-armys-active-protection-systems-rodeo\/\" target=\"_blank\">decided to host a demonstration<\/a> in late fall last year with two additional systems: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/09\/24\/rafael-to-demo-lighter-active-protection-capability-on-stryker-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rafael\u2019s Trophy VPS <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/03\/08\/rheinmetall-intensifies-push-to-enter-us-army-combat-vehicle-fleet-protection-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rheinmetall\u2019s Active Defense System<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signs the demonstration wasn\u2019t proving fruitful cropped up in March, when t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/04\/02\/us-army-needs-another-year-to-pick-protection-system-for-stryker\/\" target=_blank>he service said it needed extra time<\/a> \u2014 an entire year \u2014 to evaluate options for the Stryker. Dean said the Army was hoping it would see promise in one of the systems at the end of the demonstration and then carry it through more complex characterization for better evaluation to make a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as the demonstration wrapped up, the Army decided neither would work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth Rheinmetall and the medium-weight Trophy, both have maturity challenges, but the bottom line is that they turned out to not be a suitable fit for Stryker,\u201d Dean said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did see some potential in systems,\u201d he added \u201cIt is our desire to continue to evaluate them further so we can understand them at a greater level of detail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither system received the same level of testing as Rafael\u2019s Trophy on Abrams, IMI\u2019s Iron Fist on Bradley or the Iron Curtain, Dean said, and the systems could end up being the right fit for some future effort to outfit other vehicles such as the Next-Generation Combat Vehicle program\u2019s optionally manned fighting vehicle, mobile protected firepower platform and the armored multipurpose vehicle, \u201cnone of which we have identified APS solutions for yet\/&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through continued evaluation \u201cmaybe we will eventually learn something that brings us back to Stryker,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the Bradley and the Abrams, the Stryker is a relatively lightweight platform, Dean said. \u201cIt has challenges in its space, weight and power integration. It has proven difficult for us to find a system that is entirely suitable for integration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while no operational APS system evaluated seems to work for Stryker, the Army is still looking for ways to protect the vehicle, as its value on the battlefield will increase with the addition of larger guns and more expensive weapon systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the Vehicle Protection System program office, the Army is working on reactive armor improvements focused on the Bradley and AMPV, but that could be of particular value for the Stryker, Dean said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/08\/29\/army-to-bring-new-vehicle-protection-technologies-to-fleet-as-early-as-2020\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/taps2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army to bring new vehicle protection technologies to fleet as early as 2020<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army is looking into the future of vehicle protection, with plans to pursue laser-warning systems, reactive armor tiles and signature management solutions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s laser warning program that is tied to the Modular Active Protection System program could also contribute to Stryker protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MAPS is a system under development with the Army featuring a common controller into which hard-kill and soft-kill protection can be plugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army will conduct a demonstration with layered hard-kill and soft-kill protection capability later this year as part of a culminating exercise for its MAPS program, according to Dean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe soft-kill may ultimately prove to be particularly well-suited for Stryker,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those soft-kill systems are jammers and smoke systems that help obscure, tend to take up relatively little space and are less expensive then hard-kill APS, which require the reloading of countermeasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is also studying what it may need for a future APS, and it plans to initiate a program in the late part of next fiscal year, which could also be an opportunity to develop something more suitable for the Stryker, said Dean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army does have plans to protect its combat vehicles from rockets and missiles, in a June 6 letter sent to Army Secretary Mark Esper, a group of 13 House lawmakers expressed concern the service isn\u2019t doing enough to outfit its current fleet with APS. They asked the service to explain why it hadn\u2019t requested any further funding for APS upgrades in the budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dean, for the Abrams and the Bradley \u201cwe are resourced to meet the requirements that we have on an urgent basis to outfit a limited number of brigades.
