{"id":39621,"date":"2018-08-05T01:09:40","date_gmt":"2018-08-05T01:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/08\/05\/a-pair-of-austal-ships-ace-acceptance-trials\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:18:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:18:08","slug":"a-pair-of-austal-ships-ace-acceptance-trials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2018\/08\/05\/a-pair-of-austal-ships-ace-acceptance-trials\/","title":{"rendered":"A pair of Austal ships ace acceptance trials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two ships built at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2016\/07\/05\/austal-takes-115-million-lcs-write-off\/\" target=_blank>Austal USA<\/a>\u2019s Mobile Alabama shipyard cleared the last major hurdle before joining the fleet last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expeditionary fast transport Burlington and the littoral combat ship Charleston both successfully completed acceptance trials, according to press releases from Naval Sea System Command and Austal USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/03\/20\/navy-secretary-bristles-during-questions-about-lcs-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">Austal<\/a> is coming close to the end of its planned 12 expeditionary fast transports \u2013 Burlington is EPF-10, while EPF-11, the Peurto Rico, and EPF-12, the Newport, are under construction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is still a ways yet to go on LCS, with more orders expected out of this year\u2019s budget. The 2019 National Defense Authorization Act authorized three LCS, but its unclear how many would go to Austal and how many will go to Lockheed\u2019s partner yard in Marinette, Wisconsin. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2018\/06\/11\/lockheed-austal-usa-serve-up-new-batch-of-lcs-amid-frigate-competition\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/souix_city.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lockheed, Austal USA serve up new batch of LCS amid frigate competition<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The littoral combat ship program continues to push ships to the fleet as the program begins to wind down ahead of the Navy\u2019s planned transition to a future frigate.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LCS Charleston is the ninth of the aluminum trimaran hulls to constructed by Austal and it plans to deliver the ship to the Navy by the end of the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The yard is also on various stages of construction for several other LCS, according to the Austal release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCincinnati (LCS 20) has launched and is preparing for trials. Final assembly is well underway on Kansas City (LCS 22) and Oakland (LCS 24),\u201d the release said. \u201cModules for the future USS Mobile (LCS 26) are under construction in the module manufacturing facility and construction on Savannah (LCS 28) commenced mid-July.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Austal is coming close to the end of its planned 12 expeditionary fast transports.
