{"id":39643,"date":"2019-05-08T14:30:18","date_gmt":"2019-05-08T14:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/05\/08\/saab-to-build-new-t-x-plant-in-indiana\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:09:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:09:38","slug":"saab-to-build-new-t-x-plant-in-indiana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2019\/05\/08\/saab-to-build-new-t-x-plant-in-indiana\/","title":{"rendered":"Saab to build new plant in Indiana for T-X trainer jet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Swedish aircraft manufacturer Saab will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2019\/02\/04\/check-out-who-is-helping-boeing-build-the-next-air-force-training-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">build a T-X production facility in West Lafayette, Indiana,<\/a> where it will manufacture its portion of the Air Force trainer jet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2018\/09\/27\/reuters-air-force-awards-9b-contract-to-boeing-for-next-training-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">it is developing with Boeing<\/a>, the company announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company plans to invest $37 million in the site, which will produce \u201cmajor structural sections\u201d and conduct final assembly of Saab\u2019s piece of the jet, according to a Saab news release. Then those elements will be sent to Boeing\u2019s facility in St. Louis, Missouri, to be mated with the rest of the trainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction on the new facility will begin in 2020, and Saab intends to hire at least 300 full-time employees from the area during the initial years of the site\u2019s operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement, made Wednesday during a ceremony at West Lafayette-based Purdue University, fulfills a promise Saab officials made in 2017 to establish a new manufacturing center in the United States once the Boeing-Saab team had won the T-X contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Saab President and CEO H\u00e5kan Buskhe said the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/afa-air-space\/2017\/09\/18\/saab-pledges-to-open-new-facility-in-us-for-t-x-but-questions-remain\/\" target=_blank>was still considering site locations<\/a>, as well as whether to repurpose an existing production facility or construct a new campus. We see great possibilities here for this facility and our partnerships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to building the new facility, the Swedish company will partner with Purdue University, a hub of engineering talent in the Midwest, to conduct research on advances in sensors, artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the ceremony, Buskhe noted the scope and level of investment of these activities has not been decided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the T-X program, Saab and Boeing will produce at least 351 trainers for the U.S. Air Force. The Navy and Marine Corps is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2019\/05\/07\/the-air-forces-new-trainer-jet-is-attracting-the-navys-and-marine-corps-interests\/\" target=\"_blank\">also interested in buying the jet<\/a>, and the Air Force is considering its use for simulating adversaries during combat and for light-attack missions \u2014 a prospect that could land the Saab-Boeing team additional sales in the hundreds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force awarded the $9.2 billion T-X contract to Saab and Boeing last year, and the service\u2019s first T-X
