{"id":39753,"date":"2021-05-19T19:32:05","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T19:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/05\/19\/teledyne-flir-merger-brings-deep-space-to-deep-sea-sensing-tech-under-one-roof\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:05:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:05:18","slug":"teledyne-flir-merger-brings-deep-space-to-deep-sea-sensing-tech-under-one-roof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2021\/05\/19\/teledyne-flir-merger-brings-deep-space-to-deep-sea-sensing-tech-under-one-roof\/","title":{"rendered":"Teledyne, FLIR merger brings deep space to deep-sea sensing tech under one roof"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Teledyne Technologies\u2019 $8.2 billion acquisition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/11\/15\/heres-who-just-won-a-contract-to-build-the-armys-heavy-robot\/\" target=\"_blank\">FLIR Systems,<\/a> finalized May 14, sets it up to become increasingly competitive in the world of unmanned and sensing capabilities, the latter\u2019s vice president and general manager of unmanned systems and integrated solutions told Defense News in a May 18 interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Teledyne-FLIR merger makes it \u201cthe only company that has the breadth and depth of unmanned systems across its portfolio,\u201d Roger Wells said. \u201cFLIR was very strong and continues to be very strong in the unmanned airborne systems and in the unmanned ground systems, building on our acquisition of Prox Dynamics and Aeryon Labs and then, on the ground, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2018\/11\/12\/one-company-wants-to-help-herd-us-army-robots\/\" target=\"_blank\">Endeavor Robotics.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teledyne brings an \u201cextremely strong, very sophisticated set of capabilities, underwater systems as well as surface vehicles,\u201d he added. \u201cTogether we have the opportunity to not only put more advanced technology on our platforms, but also integrate in driving interoperability across all of these platforms to really create unique ways of solving very complex operational problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have the capabilities to go from deep space to deep seas,\u201d he noted, \u201cand that\u2019s kind of cool having that breadth and that amount of capability across this diverse market set.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While FLIR will be fully incorporated into the digital imaging segment with Teledyne, it will get to keep its name, going by Teledyne FLIR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to build on the strength of Teledyne, but we also want to acknowledge the strength of FLIR.Aand those two brands, those two technology sets together really, really sets us apart in the market,\u201d Wells said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that Teledyne doesn\u2019t plan to spin off any of FLIR\u2019s businesses or close down its facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FLIR, as part of Teledyne, will continue to capitalize on its successful contracts. It is supplying the tiny Black Hornet, a palm-sized unmanned aircraft system, which was chosen to become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2019\/09\/11\/unleash-the-hornets-combat-vehicles-and-robots-get-new-kit-to-increase-standoff\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Army\u2019s Soldier Borne Sensor<\/a>, providing reconnaissance capabilities at the individual soldier level. The company recently won an additional $14.5 million contract to provide Black Hornet to the Army. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/idex\/2017\/02\/23\/flir-owned-prox-dynamics-brings-night-vision-to-tiny-drone\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black Hornet became a FLIR product<\/a> when it purchased its developer, Norwegian company Prox Dynamics, in 2016 for $134 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FLIR was also chosen to produce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/11\/16\/us-armys-heavy-ground-robot-reaches-full-rate-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">Common Robotic System-Heavy<\/a> for the U.S. Army and reached full-rate production in November 2020. It is also delivering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/unmanned-unleashed\/2017\/04\/12\/army-poised-to-transform-ground-robotics-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\">Man Transportable Robotic System,<\/a> a medium-sized robot to provide standoff capability to identify and neutralize explosive hazards, to the service as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the company is providing advanced sensors for the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/01\/09\/army-picks-winners-to-build-light-and-medium-robotic-combat-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\">medium robotic combat vehicle prototyping effort<\/a> as part of a Textron and Howe &amp; Howe team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FLIR is contributing technology, particularly thermal imaging and artificial intelligence capabilities, to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/10\/11\/armys-do-it-all-goggles-to-reach-soldiers-hands-in-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\">Integrated Visual Augmentation System<\/a>, a pair of goggles worn by soldiers providing intelligence during operations. FLIR also provides countless imaging and detection sensors on a wide variety of platforms throughout the U.S. military and to more than 50 countries around the globe. The company expects its technology in that department to become even better under Teledyne, according to Wells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTeledyne is a technology company, and they really work hard to make sure that they\u2019ve got the right technology that is designed to fit the mission, the solution and the needs of the customer. That philosophy and that culture really aligns well with FLIR, as does the technology base that we are pursuing,\u201d Wells said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got really strong technology that goes everywhere from sonar to [chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosives detection] and everything in between, especially the really core pieces of technology that both Teledyne and FLIR have strengthened including visible thermal X-ray, electronic [light detection and ranging] technology that\u2019s designed to support a wide variety of applications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that FLIR has become part of Teledyne, it hopes to have even more leverage to pursue critical parts of major modernization opportunities on the horizon like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/04\/15\/pencils-up-bids-are-due-for-armys-bradley-replacement-and-its-only-the-beginning\/\" target=\"_blank\">next-generation combat vehicle development<\/a> the Army is pursuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe combined entity gives us the opportunity to expand our solution set and go pursue larger opportunities,\u201d Wells said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, Teledyne and FLIR will be able to \u201ccombine true, multi-modal sensing capabilities, driving increasing levels of intelligence and embedding [artificial intelligence] on the edge, tying these capabilities together in interoperable frameworks, through common software \u2026 to really reduce the cognitive load and burden on the operator, drive better information that enables more timely and mission-oriented decision making and embed these next-generation
