{"id":39934,"date":"2020-03-16T21:26:36","date_gmt":"2020-03-16T21:26:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/16\/with-coronavirus-on-the-loose-us-shipyards-make-adjustments-but-keep-building\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:06:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:06:32","slug":"with-coronavirus-on-the-loose-us-shipyards-make-adjustments-but-keep-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/coronavirus\/2020\/03\/16\/with-coronavirus-on-the-loose-us-shipyards-make-adjustments-but-keep-building\/","title":{"rendered":"With coronavirus on the loose, US shipyards make adjustments but keep building"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 U.S. shipyards are adjusting to meet the new coronavirus threat, but work continues across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of news that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2020\/03\/14\/fincantieri-suspends-operations-amid-coronavirus-crisis\/\" target=_blank>Fincantieri\u2019s shipyards in Italy has suspended operations<\/a> for two weeks to help stem the spread of the illness, US shipyards have responded with more modest changes: suspending international travel, limiting domestic travel and suspending participation in conferences and trade shows for shipyard employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yards are also changing leave policies to allow workers time to adjust to restrictions that have closed schools and businesses across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While to date the changes have been minor, several company officials told Defense News that the situation was evolving and more could be coming down the pike as the government responds to the unfolding crisis that has rocked the country over the past week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2020\/01\/21\/huntington-ingalls-names-new-program-director-for-the-columbia-class\/\" target=_blank>Huntington Ingalls Industries<\/a>\u2019 president and CEO Mike Petters addressed employees in a video message posted to the company\u2019s website Monday. Peters said he is meeting regularly with division leadership and the company has posted links to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which he urged employees to check for the most accurate information.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2020\/01\/30\/the-carrier-ford-is-trying-to-shake-years-of-controversy-and-find-its-groove\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/E-2D-on-Ford.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The carrier Ford is trying to shake years of controversy and find its groove<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Over the coming year, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Ford will be underway 11 times over 220 days, working out the kinks, training sailors and writing the book on how the new class of carriers will operate.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees who are experiencing symptoms or believe they may have been exposed should let the company know, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow more than ever we need to work as a team and look out for each other,\u201d Petters said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also on Monday, HII&#8217;s Newport News Shipbuilding division president Jennifer Boykin extended &#8220;liberal leave&#8221; policies through second shift on March 20. In a post on the company&#8217;s website, Boykin added that work would be &#8220;minimized&#8221; during the weekend and that with some exceptions, parking lots at the yard \u2013 the nation&#8217;s only aircraft carrier manufacturer \u2013 would be open through Friday with no reserved spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newport News Shipbuilding spokesperson Duane Bourne said the health and safety of workers remained the primary focus, calling it &#8220;premature to speculate on the impact of COVID-19 on our contracts.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are having ongoing discussions with our customers and will continue that dialogue in preparing contingencies and future plans,&#8221; Bourne wrote in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fincantieri\u2019s Marinette shipyard in Wisconsin has suspended all international travel, all noncritical domestic travel and has suspended intracompany travel to prevent any potential spread between shipyards, said Eric Dent, the company\u2019s spokesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, to date the company has seen no delays in operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo far, we have experienced no production delays,\u201d Dent said. \u201cObviously like other businesses and shipyards, we have to balance force health protection and production as we work through this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2020\/03\/11\/italys-top-two-defense-firms-restricts-business-travel-over-coronavirus\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-630946268.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Italy\u2019s top two defense firms restrict business travel over coronavirus<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Italy has become the worst-hit country outside of Asia, with the death toll from the COVID-19 virus reaching 827 on March 11, 2020.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At General Dynamics\u2019 shipyards, both Bath Iron Works and submarine builder Electric Boat are continuing work, though they \u2013 like all the other yards \u2013 are allowing anyone who can work from home to do so, said Jeff Davis, a GD spokesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GD has likewise curtailed travel and ceased company participation in trade shows, Davis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric Boat spokesperson, Liz Power, said the submarine builder is following all government recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cElectric Boat remains open for business,\u201d Power said. &#8220;Our ongoing mission is to provide our Navy with the high-quality submarines they require to complete their missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have initiated all government-recommended measures to mitigate spread of the disease and continue to work closely with our employees, customers, suppliers, stakeholders and our community to keep them informed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ship repair industry is also taking precautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colonna&#8217;s Shipyard Vice President Bob Boyd said the company is also asking its estimated 700 employees to follow the CDC&#8217;s guidelines and advising anyone who feels sick to stay home. The company is doing additional screening with non-employees at its entrance, asking about recent travel and contacts, and talking with subcontractors about policies, Boyd said. With schools closed throughout Virginia, Colonna&#8217;s &#8220;just taking it day-by-day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dock landing ship Gunston Hall left Colonna&#8217;s Shipyard in Norfolk last week and the company is currently working on Coast Guard vessel as well as Military Sealift Command&#8217;s expeditionary fast transport ship Burlington, Boyd said. He said he couldn&#8217;t speculate on what an order to stop work to counter the spread of the virus could mean for federal contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObviously, if they\u2019re shut down or we\u2019re ordered not to perform work, then you know, we\u2019ll follow those orders and resume work once we\u2019re cleared, but you know, it hasn\u2019t happened,\u201d Boyd said. &#8220;We can\u2019t speculate that it will.
