{"id":40548,"date":"2021-12-05T02:14:39","date_gmt":"2021-12-05T02:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/12\/05\/us-should-expect-cyberattacks-in-any-struggle-for-taiwan\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:09:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:09:31","slug":"us-should-expect-cyberattacks-in-any-struggle-for-taiwan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/2021\/12\/05\/us-should-expect-cyberattacks-in-any-struggle-for-taiwan\/","title":{"rendered":"US should expect cyberattacks in any struggle for Taiwan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SIMI VALLEY, Calif. \u2015 Several U.S. defense leaders said Saturday they are worried that a confrontation with China over Taiwan would lead to a wave of significant cyberattacks against U.S. critical infrastructure that could disrupt day-to-day life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m particularly concerned about them in terms of what they might do in terms of cyberattacks on our critical infrastructure here in the United States,\u201d Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a real possibility that if we ever got into a conflict you could see attacks on our power grid, for example, or the transportation sector, which would have implications not only for how we would be able to project our military, but also have substantial consequences for the American public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments came amid rising tensions between the U.S. and China over Taiwan, the democratically-ruled island which China considers its own territory. Over the past year, China has increased the frequency of incursions of its aircraft breaching Taiwan\u2019s air defense buffer zone. It also follows news of a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/02\/politics\/china-hackers-espionage-defense-contractors\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">suspected Chinese hacking campaign<\/a> against U.S. defense and tech companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed, D-R.I., said here that he expects there would be a \u201cmajor\u201d attack that \u201cwould be disruptive to American society\u201d and target critical assets like the reserve aviation and maritime fleets critical to ferrying troops and supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLooking at Taiwan, I don\u2019t think it would be the traditional D-Day because that would take months to organize,\u201d Reed said, adding that cyberwarfare would be a significant feature. \u201cWe have to build our defenses, which we\u2019re trying, and be able to counteract.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking separately, Republican Wisconsin Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/06\/03\/lawmakers-champion-china-deterrence-fund-but-not-bidens-version\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Gallagher<\/a> argued Washington needs a way to better war-game and communicate the risk of a devastating cyber attack on U.S. infrastructure, if the U.S. confronts China over Taiwan. American water, power and transportation systems would be at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn such a confrontation, Las Vegas rules would not apply. What happens in the Taiwan Straits would not be confined there,\u201d said Gallagher, who co-chaired the bipartisan, congressionally mandated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/digital-show-dailies\/c4isr-conference\/2021\/04\/21\/new-defense-industrial-base-cyber-hardening-requirements-likely\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cyberspace Solarium Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just fear we\u2019re not attacking this with a sense of urgency,\u201d Gallagher said. \u201cI feel like unless we change course, that we\u2019re going to lose World War III before it begins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also at the conference, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the U.S. is working to support Taiwan\u2019s ability to defend itself in line with the Taiwan Relations Act, and he warned that China is edging toward its own nuclear triad of land, air and sea-launched intercontinental nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While China\u2019s made recent progress with cyber capabilities, nuclear weapons, space and hypersonic weapons, he said those moves should be met \u201cwith confidence and resolve \u2014 not panic and pessimism.\u201d He added later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/reagan-defense-forum\/2021\/12\/04\/the-defense-secretarys-plan-for-china-includes-better-tech-less-panic\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWe\u2019re clear-eyed about the challenge that China presents, but China\u2019s not 10 feet tall.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked in a discussion with Fox News\u2019 Bret Baier what keeps him up at night, Austin said it was adversaries\u2019 space and cyber capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes the next serious challenge can come from a place that you don\u2019t expect,\u201d he said. \u201cI want to make sure we have sufficient capabilities in cyber and space that compliment the rest of the inventory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defense forum, in its eighth year, brings together lawmakers and defense leaders for a day of discussions on national security strategy, priorities and
