MADRID \u2014\u00a0Are we heading for a kind of <\/span>new Cold War in\u00a0the Mediterranean and Black S<\/span>seas? Russia’s military intervention of Russia <\/span>in Syria has suggested\u00a0revealed <\/span>this scenario, along with its growing\u00a0as real growing with a major<\/span> display presence <\/span>of its <\/span>warships and submarines around the Mediterranean, in the Black Sea\u00a0and at the Syrian port of Latakia (28 miles from Turkish border) \u2014\u00a0a main “homeport”\u00a0of the Russian Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This geostrategic situation is evolving while when -what a coincidence- <\/span>NATO is developing its biggest, and <\/span>most ambitious exercise in more than a decade with about\u00a036,000 troops, more than 140 aircraft\u00a0and 60 ships from over 30 nations. In addition to\u00a0,\u00a0including , along with <\/span>NATO allies, participants include Australia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Macedonia, Sweden \u2014\u00a0and\u00a0Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The live exercise <\/span>Trident Juncture 2015 exercise was <\/span>opened Oct. 19 last Monday <\/span>in Trapani Air Base, Sicily,\u00a0and will be hosted by Italy, Spain and Portugal until Nov.\u00a06.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are very concerned about the Russian military build-up,”\u00a0NATO’s Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow told reporters.\u00a0during the opening ceremony.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0[…] \u00a0<\/span>“The increasing concentration of forces in Kaliningrad, the Black Sea and,\u00a0now, in the eastern Mediterranean does pose some additional challenges.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Oct. 20, the\u00a0Tuesday, <\/span>US Navy announced the destroyer Ross successfully intercepted a ballistic missile in the North Atlantic Ocean as part of an integrated air- and missile-defense demonstration with eight other nations. The destroyer is based on the Spanish Navy Base of Rota, near the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is the first time a Standard Missile-3 Block IA guided interceptor was fired on a non-US\u00a0range and the first intercept of a ballistic missile threat in the European theater,”\u00a0the US\u00a0Navy confirmed only two weeks after four Russian Navy warships launched a total of <\/span>26 cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea to supposed targets in Syria.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That launching was a surprising Russian show of force that could have aftermaths also in the Mediterranean Sea where, don’t forget it, four US\u00a0Navy guided missile destroyers are based nearby, in Rota,” a top military official told Defense News.\u00a0(Spain). <\/span>“Four destroyers equipped with the Aegis combat system.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other nations like <\/span>Spain and the Netherlands took part in the missile-defense demonstration. This concern has increased with the Russian military intervention in Syria and the threat in Turkey.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
