Andrew Carlson and the crew of Zumwalt took the ship to Alaska, where they got to experience some heavy seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We took advantage of a storm up near Alaska that presented us with Sea State Six conditions,\u201d said Carlson, referring to sea\u2019s waves between 13 and 20 feet high. \u201cAll told I\u2019d rather be on that ship than any other ship I\u2019ve been on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2018\/02\/15\/its-official-the-navys-new-stealth-destroyers-will-be-ship-killers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635941854432565147-stealth-destroyer-weig-3-jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Navy\u2019s stealth destroyers to get new weapons and a new mission: killing ships<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy is asking Congress to fund a conversion of its 600-foot stealth destroyers from primarily a land attack ship to an anti-surface, offensive strike platform.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seas were so high at one point he called down to his executive officer to tell him the ship had hit Sea State Six, but his XO said that based on the rolls he was feeling in his cabin, it couldn\u2019t be more than Sea State Three, a more tranquil 1- to 4-foot height measurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s due to the way the tumblehome hull design was built, righting itself much more quickly that previous classes of ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou definitely have to get used to the roll, which is very short compared to other ships,\u201d Carlson said. \u201cFor those of us who have been on cruisers, especially up top, you kind of lean over 15 degrees and you wonder if you are going to come back. We didn\u2019t experience any of that. As long as you get used to the finer oscillation, it really handles very well.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carlson, who discussed the ship\u2019s design with Defense News at the annual Surface Navy Association meeting, said traversing through rough weather was part of ongoing stability testing, which he said is about 60-70 percent complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe biggest known variable for these stability tests is the weather,\u201d Carlson said. \u201cSo we\u2019ve had days where we wanted to do calm water trials and there are white caps, so its not calm enough for us to get the right data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn this case we were looking for bad weather and we were able to [a] leverage storm system up near the Gulf of Alaska that had substantial wave action hundreds of miles away from that \u2014 still tenable without any risk to the ship. Kojima\/Honolulu Star-Advertiser via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u2018Tokyo Drift\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quick-righting hull is something a crew gets in every sea state, not just in stormy seas, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s just a much tighter periodicity in the roll, and a lot of that has to do with the rigidness and the stability of how the ship is built,\u201d Carlson said. \u201cBut that\u2019s something we\u2019ve experienced in other sea states. You don\u2019t have to have extravagant wave action to realize that the ship rights herself very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was an odd feeling at first,\u201d he added. \u201cThe first time I was on the bridge as a newly reported sailor, not yet assumed the job of executive office, we had some speed on and the officer of the deck ordered a large rudder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd I intuitively thought, \u2018I\u2019m going to need to lean into this turn\u2019 \u2014 you almost fall the other way because the ship doesn\u2019t heel in the same way. Some of that is the hull form, some of that is the relative location of the rudder stops, the size of the propellers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also took Carlson some time to get used to how Zumwalt handles turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe generally slides more than cuts into the water,\u201d Carlson said. \u201cIt\u2019s actually more fun. There\u2019s a little bit of \u2018Tokyo Drift\u2019 going on where you can really get a faster turn on with harder rudder, but still very stable. It\u2019s not like you are tumbling around,&#8221; he said. \u201cWhen we were up in those big waves, the bow was piercing through; you\u2019re getting some of that water coming up.
