{"id":41520,"date":"2018-10-04T14:31:19","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T14:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/04\/boeing-embraer-reportedly-in-talks-on-bringing-kc-390-production-to-us\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:25:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:25:52","slug":"boeing-embraer-reportedly-in-talks-on-bringing-kc-390-production-to-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2018\/10\/04\/boeing-embraer-reportedly-in-talks-on-bringing-kc-390-production-to-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Boeing, Embraer reportedly in talks to bring KC-390 production to US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/12\/21\/boeings-potential-embraer-acquisition-would-widen-its-defense-portfolio\/\" target=_blank>Boeing and Brazilian aerospace company Embraer<\/a> are reportedly discussing the prospect of building an assembly line for Embraer\u2019s KC-390 cargo planes in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Brazilian newspaper Valor Economico, which first reported the talks on Oct. 1, and a subsequent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-embraer-boeing\/boeing-embraer-to-build-kc-390-military-cargo-jet-in-u-s-newspaper-idUSKCN1MB2PI\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters <\/a>story, the two companies see a U.S. KC-390 plant as part of a larger defense-related joint venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussions on KC-390 follow a July agreement that gave Boeing an 80 percent stake in Embraer\u2019s commercial business, and it was widely speculated that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/2018\/07\/15\/boeing-and-embraer-have-a-new-deal-what-it-means-for-defense-is-unclear\/\" target=\"_blank\">similar deal on the companies\u2019 defense business<\/a> hammered out in the coming months would involve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/farnborough\/2018\/07\/19\/special-mission-aircraft-kc-390-main-focus-for-embraer-in-boeing-tie-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">greater cooperation with Boeing on KC-390<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/08\/13\/embraers-defense-head-talks-growth-areas-for-the-brazilian-giant\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-519446592.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Embraer\u2019s defense head talks growth areas for the Brazilian giant<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Jackson Schneider, the head of Embraer&#039;s defense unit, sees opportunities to grow his business following a new agreement with Boeing.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackson Schneider, president and CEO of Embraer Defense &amp; Security, told Defense News this July that more information about a Boeing-Embraer tie up on KC-390 could be revealed later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing and Embraer established agreements in 2012 and 2014 that allow the U.S. firm to have a hand in global marketing and logistics support of the KC-390, but a defense-related joint venture would allow for \u201cmuch broader collaboration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoeing has fantastic experience, [and] the KC-390 is a fantastic plane; it is a game-changer,\u201d he said at Farnborough Airshow. \u201cBut I understand that we don\u2019t have a substantial number of clients yet because we are in the certification phase. For sure I think that the Boeing presence in the market is very complementary of what we have. It will enlarge significantly our opportunities in terms of sales.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KC-390 is a multi-mission aircraft built to haul cargo, transport passengers, insert special operators and refuel other aircraft, among other uses. However, Embraer has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/paris-air-show\/2017\/06\/05\/embraer-expecting-first-international-kc-390-sale-in-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\">struggled to draw serious interest<\/a> from international buyers and Brazil currently remains its only customer \u2014 although the aircraft has prospects in Portugal and New Zealand and with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/singapore-airshow\/2018\/02\/07\/embraer-to-sell-six-kc-390s-to-defense-services-company\/\" target=\"_blank\">a commercial aviation services company<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA decision to build the aircraft in the U.S. would likely only be undertaken if Boeing\/Embraer could sell KC-390 to the [U.S.] Air Force, Navy, or Marine Corps,\u201d wrote Byron Callan of Capital Alpha Partners in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could be a tall order, as the U.S. services historically have operated Lockheed Martin\u2019s C-130 Hercules for the same purpose and are either in the process of replacing old variants with new ones, or lack the money to replace old C-130s and plan to recapitalize them instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Air Force is upgrading active units\u2019 older C-130 models to the newest C-130J Super Hercules, but the service does not have the funding to expand the current C-130J program of record and will have to upgrade some C-130H models, said Lt. Gen. Jerry Harris, the services deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements, during a Sept. 28 hearing in front of a subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Navy plans to replace its C-130T fleet with 25 new KC-130Js in the early 2020s, Rear Adm.
