{"id":41700,"date":"2020-02-11T13:09:24","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T13:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/02\/11\/heres-the-timeline-for-the-us-navys-next-generation-frigate\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:25:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:25:28","slug":"heres-the-timeline-for-the-us-navys-next-generation-frigate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2020\/02\/11\/heres-the-timeline-for-the-us-navys-next-generation-frigate\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s the timeline for the US Navy\u2019s next-generation frigate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2013 The Navy is expected to buy its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/01\/30\/the-us-navy-is-planning-for-its-new-frigate-to-be-a-workhorse\/\" target=\"_blank\">next-generation frigate <\/a>in the coming months, so here\u2019s what the next few years are going to look like in FFG(X)-land, according to budget documents released Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy plans to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/07\/09\/has-the-us-navy-thought-this-new-frigate-through-new-report-raises-questions\/\" target=_blank> award the frigate design and construction <\/a>award to one of the competitors in July, the documents say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competitors for FFG(X) are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/07\/05\/fincantieris-fremm-frigate-design-bulks-up-for-the-us-ffgx-competition\/\" target=_blank> Fincantieri\u2019s FREMM design<\/a>; General Dynamics Bath Iron Works and Navantia\u2019s F-100 variant, which is roughly equivalent to a small Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many observers think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/surface-navy-association\/2017\/01\/12\/ingalls-ready-to-build-more-ships\/\" target=_blank>Huntington Ingalls Industries<\/a> will offer an up-gunned version of the National Security Cutter; and Austal USA\u2019s frigate version of its aluminum-hulled Independence-class littoral combat ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed Martin\u2019s version of the FFG(X), an up-gunned, twin-screw variant of its Freedom-class LCS, was pulled from the competition in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is planing for it to take six years to complete design and construction of the ship, which should be finished in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once construction begins, however, planners anticipate it will take only 48 months to build.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2019\/12\/25\/pentagon-proposal-cuts-an-ffgx-and-an-attack-submarine-out-of-the-budget\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/FFGX-3.jpg-3.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pentagon proposal cuts an FFG(X) and an attack submarine from the budget<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A Pentagon proposal would slow the buying profile for both the new FFG(X) program and the Virginia-class submarine.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second frigate is expected to be ordered in April 2021, and from there it should be delivered about 5 \u00bd years after the award date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means that the first ship should be delivered to the fleet in July of 2026, and the second about three months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FFG(X) is supposed to be a small, multi-mission ship with a modified version of Raytheon\u2019s SPY-6 radar destined for the Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, Lockheed Martin\u2019s Aegis Combat System, as well as some point defense systems and 32 vertical launch cells for about half the cost of a DDG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, without knowing which ship the Navy intends to buy and what the final detailed designs look like, firm price estimates are impossible, but the Pentagon has some projections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first ship ordered in 2020 is expected to cost $1.28 billion, according to budget documents, with the next ship in 2021 dropping to $1.05 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third ship, ordered in 2022, should see the price drop below $1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><u>The whole program should cost $19.81 billion, the Navy estimates.<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The buy was supposed to be one ship in FY20, then two vessels every year until the full 20-ship buy was complete. But the Navy wanted to make sure it staggered the buy more responsibly, said Rear Adm. Randy Crites, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The frigate, we don\u2019t want to have a repeat of some of the lessons of LCS where we got going too fast,\u201d Crites said. &#8220;As it is, we\u2019re going to have eight frigates under construction when we deliver the first one in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now we\u2019ll award one later this year, we\u2019ll award one next year, and the plan is for one next year but that will get looked at.
