I have been fortunate to serve in the U.S. Senate longer than any other Alabamian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shelby, 86, served as chairman of the Senate appropriations committee and defense subcommittee but his role changed after Democrats won control of the Senate in recent elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2021\/02\/04\/familiar-lawmakers-take-gavels-of-defense-panels\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1227815140.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Familiar faces take gavels of defense panels<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">This week saw a wave of organizational moves in both chambers, with familiar faces in new roles and some new lawmakers added to the Armed Services committees.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A proponent for the littoral combat ship and expeditionary fast transport vessel, both built by Mobile shipbuilder Austal, Shelby acknowledged his advocacy on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2017\/12\/13\/election-leaves-alabama-shaped-hole-on-senate-armed-services-committee\/\" target=_blank>Alabama<\/a> and its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have worked to enhance Alabama\u2019s role in space exploration and the security of our nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alabama is more to more than 300 aerospace companies, and aerospace manufacturing accounts for about 13,000 jobs there, according to the state\u2019s commerce department. Mobile is home to the Airbus commercial airplanes division. Fort Rucker is home to the Army\u2019s helicopter training center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, Huntsville is home to Redstone Arsenal, a major research, engineering and test center that houses the Pentagon\u2019s critical missile defense and the Army\u2019s aviation managers. It\u2019s also home to NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center, the U.S. government\u2019s civilian rocketry and spacecraft propulsion research center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Redstone was selected last month for U.S. Space Command\u2019s future headquarters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate\u2019s lead Republican on appropriations, Alabama Sen.
