Textron had recently identified a gap in unmanned land vehicles, and this seemed to fit exactly the niche that the company was looking to fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI saw this tracked vehicle kind of flying through the woods and up and over the berms, and so I went and did a little research,&#8221; Atherton told reporters on Jan. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Textron declared in October that it intended to purchase the Waterboro, Maine-based company. On Dec. 17, the deal was finalized, the company announced Thursday morning. The businesses have not disclosed the price or terms of the sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/10\/25\/textron-buys-ground-robot-manufacturer-howe-howe\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Howe-Howe-Technologies.PNG.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Textron buys ground robot manufacturer Howe &#038; Howe<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Textron is adding to its unmanned systems portfolio.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Textron executives believe Howe &amp; Howe, which specializes in innovative robotic ground vehicles, is a natural fit for their company, which is known for building unmanned systems \u2014 predominantly drones like the RQ-9 Shadow and maritime assets like the common unmanned surface vehicle that can deploy from a littoral combat ship to find mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Textron brings with it the ability to manufacture unmanned systems en masse and to support them in the field. Howe &amp; Howe\u2019s senior vice president, Michael Howe, said his company\u2019s inventiveness, coupled with Textron\u2019s experience selling unmanned systems to the government, \u201cmakes for an extremely formidable combination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atherton said she is looking forward to getting Howe &amp; Howe the investment dollars necessary to start work on new products and make existing ones more robust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMike and Geoff [Howe, the company\u2019s other founder] both have a ton of great ideas,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They have ideas that they\u2019ve sketched out in their books forever that they just haven\u2019t had the opportunity to do the investment for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several of Howe &amp; Howe\u2019s robotic land vehicles have been evaluated by the U.S. Army. Its Ripsaw vehicle \u2014 the small unmanned tank seen on \u201cJay Leno\u2019s Garage\u201d \u2014 has undergone testing at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. But when sequestration slowed down funding of tests, the Howe brothers looked for other venues to promote it, landing the product a role in the 2015 classic \u201cMad Max: Fury Road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat speaks to their ingenuity, their ability to survive through sequestration as a small company,\u201d Atherton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Howe &amp; Howe\u2019s RS2-H1 robot, invented to carry soldiers&#8217; gear, is competing against three other unmanned land vehicles for the Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport program contract. Two Army infantry brigade combat teams and an undisclosed Marine unit are currently assessing the four contenders ahead of a downselect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/05\/27\/one-of-these-four-robot-vehicles-could-take-the-load-off-army-squads\/\" target=_blank>Army Times reported last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atherton named that opportunity as one of the four big programs she\u2019s hoping Textron can win in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
