Just don\u2019t expect space-based cargo ops."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. \u2014 U.S. Air Mobility Command is excited to work with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/space\/2018\/08\/09\/space-force-will-be-6th-military-branch-by-2020-vice-president-pence-announces\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Space Force, the new, sixth armed service <\/a>poised for approval by Congress, the command\u2019s No. 2 officer said Tuesday. But AMC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/08\/02\/one-possible-job-for-spacexs-bfr-taking-the-air-forces-cargo-in-and-out-of-space\/\" target=\"_blank\">won\u2019t operate from space<\/a> any time soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fiscal 2020 National Defense Authorization Act conference report, which awaits passage by the Senate and the signature of President Donald Trump, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/12\/10\/congress-creating-space-force-with-limited-head-room\/\" target=\"_blank\">would stand up a Space Force<\/a> by amending U.S. Code Title 10 to include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/10\/23\/pentagon-presents-recommendations-on-space-force-to-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\">the new branch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill was released late Monday, and airmen at AMC were abuzz with the news Tuesday morning, Lt. Gen. Jon Thomas, the command\u2019s deputy leader, told Defense News in an exclusive interview at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know our Air Force is excited about this,\u201d he said. \u201cThe last time we did this was 1947, and it was us moving away from the Army. Now it\u2019s the Space Force, and [they\u2019re] not really moving away but becoming independent in a way that\u2019s necessary because of how things are going and progressing in the space domain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey will still be the Space Force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/12\/20\/trumps-new-space-force-to-reside-under-department-of-the-air-force\/\" target=_blank>inside the Department of the Air Force<\/a>,\u201d he added. \u201c[H]ow do we as Air Mobility Command and mobility air forces work with Space Force? This is what would happen next.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former AMC commander Gen. Carlton Everhart was enthusiastic about the promise of space, and saw the command as having a potential role in space, executing cargo transport operations there. Specifically, after visiting with SpaceX and Virgin Galactic, Everhart believed that low-cost, reusable rockets could be used to send, receive and protect cargo going to and coming from space within the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX executives \u201ctell me that they can go around the globe in 30 minutes with a BFR,\u201d Everhart said in August 2018, referencing the next-generation, reusable rocket under development by the company. \u201cThink about this. Thirty minutes, 150 metric tons [and] less than the cost of a C-5.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at this point, AMC is not pursuing that idea, Thomas said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI see no momentum, though, towards looking at space launch as a transportation capability, and thus that becomes an air mobility [mission],\u201d Thomas said. \u201cYou can call it cargo movement, but that\u2019s about where the similarities begin to break down. There is a very experienced, talented group of airmen who will become spacemen \u2014 if we call them that \u2014 that do that mission, and they do it well.
