{"id":42293,"date":"2019-11-12T17:41:35","date_gmt":"2019-11-12T17:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/11\/12\/us-air-force-to-link-f-35-with-f-22-in-connect-a-thon-experiment\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:29:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:29:38","slug":"us-air-force-to-link-f-35-with-f-22-in-connect-a-thon-experiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/training-sim\/2019\/11\/12\/us-air-force-to-link-f-35-with-f-22-in-connect-a-thon-experiment\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force to link F-35, F-22 in \u2018connect-a-thon\u2019 experiment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Air Force is preparing an experiment it hopes will link the F-22 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/hidden-troubles-f35\/\" target=_blank>F-35<\/a> fighter jets, the first in a series of experiments that service acquisition head Will Roper has dubbed \u201cconnect-a-thons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experiments are to happen every four months, starting in December. The goal is to identify a fleet of aircraft with a communications issue, invite voices from inside and outside the Pentagon to offer solutions, and then test those offerings in a live experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re making it up as we go, right? There\u2019s never been anything like this,\u201d Roper said at a breakfast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2019\/11\/12\/kc-46-cargo-solution-still-months-away\/\" target=_blank>hosted by the Defense Writers Group<\/a>. \u201cWe need a way for people to propose connections and get into the pipeline. So I wouldn\u2019t be surprised at all if it ends up being like a pitch day &#8230; having a proposal process where we review the maturity of the tech versus the benefit to the war fighter. We would do the former, our operators would do the latter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd what I love about this is it\u2019s kind of a competition within the joint force,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We\u2019re going to be looking for the fast movers to volunteer, then we\u2019ll be looking at the fast followers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first event, hosted by North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, will feature an attempt to allow the F-22 and F-35 to share battlespace \u2014 a long-sought capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-22 was built with an older data link that can\u2019t match up with the Multifunction Advanced Data Link, or MADL, system used on the newer F-35; while the F-35 can receive data through Link 16, it can\u2019t share the data back \u2014 a key capability given the envisioned role of the F-35 as a major sensor for the future Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the test, the service will use what Roper called a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/cult\/hitchhikers\/guide\/babelfish.shtml\" target=_blank>Babel Fish<\/a>-like translator\u201d under the working name of GatewayOne to serve as a \u201cuniversal translator\u201d for the two jets. The first test, in December, will feature the equipment on a pole on a test range, with the jets pinging their information back and forth from that fixed location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should that system work well, in four months Roper plans to put GatewayOne onto a Valkyrie drone, a system designed by Kratos to be cheap enough to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/paris-air-show\/2019\/06\/17\/us-air-force-looking-to-fast-track-cash-to-kratos-defense-for-additional-valkyrie-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\">disposable in a battlefield situation<\/a>. It\u2019s not the first time a drone has been used as a link between the two fighters: In 2017, Northrop Grumman pitched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/08\/23\/northrops-fix-for-f-35-and-f-22-communications-problems-involves-global-hawk-uavs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Hawk unmanned system<\/a>, equipped with a new radio, to act as a translator between the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future connect-a-thons currently planned include linking SpaceX\u2019s Starlink satellites with KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft in an effort to show commercial communications can work with military aircraft; Roper said the KC-135 community volunteered because the tanker aircraft is perpetually seeking more bandwidth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roper also expects the F-16 community \u2014 which he called \u201cvery innovative, agile operators\u201d who understand they need to keep an aging plane relevant \u2014 to \u201csign up wholesale\u201d for tests in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The acquisitions chief said he is committed to keeping the four-month schedule going, in part because it means if the technology isn\u2019t satisfactory, the service will know quickly and be able to move onto something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe good news about that is [Congress and the Pentagon] don\u2019t really have to believe us for very long. Just let us get through a few connect-a-thon cycles,\u201d Roper said. \u201cAnd if we\u2019re failing miserably, then that should tell you something about the future of the
