{"id":42357,"date":"2018-07-16T19:46:53","date_gmt":"2018-07-16T19:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/07\/16\/replacing-shadow-unmanned-aircraft-could-be-quick-win-for-army\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:16:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:16:35","slug":"replacing-shadow-unmanned-aircraft-could-be-quick-win-for-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/07\/16\/replacing-shadow-unmanned-aircraft-could-be-quick-win-for-army\/","title":{"rendered":"Replacing the Shadow drone could be \u2018quick win\u2019 for the US Army"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2018\/03\/26\/future-unmanned-aircraft-to-do-the-dull-and-dangerous-work\/\" target=_blank>ultimately replace all of its unmanned aircraft systems<\/a> with new ones to meet the missions it envisions carrying out in the future, but the service\u2019s current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2018\/04\/25\/these-two-drones-are-leaders-in-accident-rates-how-is-the-us-army-responding\/\" target=_blank>Textron-made Shadow system<\/a> may be the first to be unseated by a new UAS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the service rapidly moves on a number of projects to modernize the force for both asymmetric warfare and peer-on-peer fights, one of its priorities is to bring a family of future vertical lift aircraft into the fleet as well as UAS that will be teamed with the manned platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But procurement of new UAS does not have to wait until a new manned helicopter is fielded, nor would that make sense, as the Army wants to move away from runway-dependent unmanned systems sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2018\/03\/26\/army-aviation-at-a-crossroads-as-future-requirements-take-shape\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chinooksunset.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army aviation at \u2018a crossroads\u2019 as future requirements take shape<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">While the Army is headed toward a clean-sheet designed helicopter in the future, it&#039;s still a matter of when. The service&#039;s new Future Vertical Lift Cross-Functional Team will officially settle on a timeline in less than two years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brig. Gen. Wally Rugen, who is leading the Army\u2019s modernization efforts for Future Vertical Lift, says the service envisions using its future UAS for the \u201cdull\u201d and \u201cdangerous\u201d work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army doesn\u2019t just see its UAS teaming with manned aircraft like it does now with AH-64 attack helicopters and Shadow UAS,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2016\/10\/04\/army-details-draft-robotics-and-autonomous-systems-strategy-at-ausa\/\" target=_blank> but envisions more advanced teaming <\/a>than the current concept of manned-unmanned teaming \u2014 or MUM-T \u2014 allows, Rugen said earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is also prepared to move on a new UAS if the opportunity presents itself, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe area that we think there is potential anyway for a quick win is in something along the lines of a potential Shadow replacement,\u201d Maj. Gen. Frank Tate, the director of Army aviation in the service\u2019s Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for operations, planning and training, told Defense News in an interview shortly before leaving the position to serve in Afghanistan in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is some stuff out there today that is flying that the FVL [cross-functional team] is looking at closely to see will this in fact meet the needs,\u201d Tate said. He described rolling in a new capability to replace Shadow within Shadow platoons, which would not be difficult because not every platoon has been fielded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo we could be doing that in the near future, if, in fact, the things that we are looking at pan out as well as we hope,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has recently formed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/11\/06\/armys-modernization-command-taking-shape-under-freshly-picked-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\"> CFTs that fall under its new four-star command<\/a> to focus on modernization priorities \u2014 Army Futures Command \u2014 and FVL is one of those top priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Tate said he does not envision replacing Shadow within months, the effort would not require 10 years of development before fielding. \u201cWe are talking much, much shorter, so when I\u2019m talking \u2018soon,\u2019 I\u2019m talking just several years, not distant future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tate said the Army wants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2016\/04\/26\/army-wants-to-link-all-drones-on-the-battlefield\/\" target=_blank>runway-independent UAS with improved ranges and greater endurance,<\/a> and that is easier to use and move around the battlefield, plus systems that have reduced acoustic signatures to avoid enemy detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2018\/05\/01\/army-to-launch-drone-from-helicopter-for-first-time-this-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/uasadvancedconcepts.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army to launch drone from helicopter for first time this year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army is trying to move away from runway-dependent and cumbersome unmanned aircraft systems in favor of UAS that bring advanced teaming capabilities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A couple of UAS that fit the bill are emerging on the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2017\/10\/09\/martin-uav-hopes-to-sell-the-us-military-on-its-vertical-take-off-uav\/\" target=_blank>Martin UAV\u2019s V-Bat<\/a>, a unique vertical takeoff and landing UAS, participated in the U.S. Army\u2019s Joint Warfighting Assessment at Hohenfels, Germany, in May, taking part as an asset of the opposition force designed to challenge the service\u2019s capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/V-BAT.jpg_0491f5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/V-BAT.jpg_0491f5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/V-BAT.jpg_0491f5.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/V-BAT.jpg_0491f5.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/V-BAT.jpg_0491f5.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Martin UAV brought its unique V-Bat UAS to Hohenfels, Germany, in May where it was used by the opposition forces during the U.S. Army&#8217;s Joint Warfighting Assessment. (Photo by Jen Judson\/Defense News Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">V-Bat users at Hohenfels told Defense News that the drone had a chance to perform surveillance and reconnaissance, identifying enemy locations. In a tactical operation, V-Bat identified five enemy tanks and relayed that information to those playing the opposition force in the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army also used Shadow UAS while at the Joint Warfighting Assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The V-Bat users said the drone has a promising future. It handled well in very windy areas, surpassing expectations, and impressed with its endurance \u2014 roughly eight hours \u2014 and its extremely reduced acoustic signature while in cruise mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2018\/05\/01\/army-to-launch-drone-from-helicopter-for-first-time-this-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/uasadvancedconcepts.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army to launch drone from helicopter for first time this year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army is trying to move away from runway-dependent and cumbersome unmanned aircraft systems in favor of UAS that bring advanced teaming capabilities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rumblings around the JWA was that V-Bat could be a direct Shadow replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future demonstrations will show additional capabilities relevant to the U.S. Army\u2019s operations such as the ability to assist fires teams with targeting, Heath Niemi, Martin UAV vice president of global sales and development, told Defense News at Hohenfels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the system is operationally flexible far beyond how the U.S. Army might employ it, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed Martin brought its Stalker eXtended Endurance UAS to the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference in Tampa, Florida, in May. It wasn\u2019t necessarily a brand-new system, but it had been upgraded with a vertical takeoff and landing capability critical to future requirements for UAS to be runway-independent and functional in austere locations. The UAS could also take off from a pneumatic rail or a standard bungee launch system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy offering three unique launch options, we will support day or night flight operations in a variety of environments, expanding Stalker XE\u2019s ability to do more with less,\u201d said Russell Coons, the Stalker XE program manager. \u201cWe continue to evolve the system to bring more capability to our system operators.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has also reduced the logistics footprint for the UAS. Stalker XE is touted as a \u201csilent\u201d UAS that can fly up to eight hours with a propane fuel cell, or up to four hours with a battery at a cruise speed of 35 mph. The system weighs 24 pounds and has a 12-foot wingspan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UAS also offers a higher level of flexibility through a digital backbone that allows payloads
