{"id":42428,"date":"2019-04-18T20:51:29","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T20:51:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/04\/18\/us-armys-next-gen-unmanned-aircraft-tech-demo-plans-on-hold\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:16:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:16:49","slug":"us-armys-next-gen-unmanned-aircraft-tech-demo-plans-on-hold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2019\/04\/18\/us-armys-next-gen-unmanned-aircraft-tech-demo-plans-on-hold\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army postpones demo plans for next-gen unmanned aircraft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>UPDATE <\/i>\u2014 <i>This story has been updated to reflect Layne Merritt\u2019s correct title.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASHVILLE, Tenn. \u2014 The U.S. Army\u2019s plans to design, build and fly technology demonstrators for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2017\/04\/28\/army-to-hold-flight-demo-to-develop-next-gen-unmanned-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\">next-generation unmanned aircraft system is not moving forward.<\/a> The decision was made so the service can concentrate on future vertical lift efforts for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2019\/04\/07\/is-the-us-army-biting-off-more-than-it-can-chew-we-ask-its-future-vertical-lift-modernization-boss\/\" target=\"_blank\"> two future manned helicopter procurement programs<\/a>, according to the acting director of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command\u2019s Aviation &amp; Missile Center\u2019s Aviation Development Directorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The Army wanted to design a program, much like it did with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2018\/10\/10\/road-to-future-vertical-lift-defiant-preps-for-first-flight-valor-leaves-the-nest\/\" target=_blank>Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator (JMR-TD) program<\/a>, to get after a next-generation UAS, but the service \u201chas decided we are not going to pursue that,\u201d Layne Merritt told Defense News in an interview at the Army Aviation Association of America\u2019s annual summit on April 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With major efforts underway to build and field a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/10\/03\/us-army-triggers-design-competition-for-future-attack-reconnaissance-helicopter\/\" target=\"_blank\">future attack reconnaissance aircraft<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/04\/04\/us-army-plans-to-field-a-future-long-range-assault-helicopter-by-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\">future long-range assault aircraft<\/a>, \u201canother major acquisition is probably too much for the Army at one time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2018\/03\/26\/future-unmanned-aircraft-to-do-the-dull-and-dangerous-work\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/UASflying.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Future unmanned aircraft to do the \u2018dull\u2019 and \u2018dangerous\u2019 work<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The relationship between manned helicopters and unmanned aircraft in the future will become more advanced and complex, according to Brig. Gen. Wally Rugen, the one-star in charge of modernizing the Army&#039;s vertical lift fleet.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan now is to focus on war-gaming efforts to flesh out concepts of advanced teaming between manned and unmanned aircraft, which, Merritt said, will \u201ccall out the need for more advanced, high-performance unmanned systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army will wrap up the first phase of the next-generation UAS technology demonstrator program already underway, which is meant to produce conceptual designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is going to really enable us in modeling tools for conceptual design to help answer the questions that we will find out during the war gaming for advanced teaming,\u201d Merritt said, \u201cwhat kind of actual performance attributes are required. And then, when the Army decides, we will move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of the FVL efforts will take place within Army Futures Command, which is tasked with modernization efforts focused on complementing its newly formed doctrine \u2014 Multidomain Operations \u2014 and the National Defense Strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Army is pursuing a f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2019\/03\/28\/the-army-picks-2-drones-to-try-out-to-replace-shadow\/\" target=_blank>uture tactical UAS (FTUAS)<\/a> to replace its Shadow systems that are serving in a manned-unmanned teaming role with AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army selected a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2018\/04\/20\/v-bat-drone-to-challenge-us-army-allies-in-germany-based-exercise\/\" target=_blank>Martin UAV<\/a>-Northrop Grumman team as well as AAI Corporation, a unit of Textron, to provide UAS for platoons to test as candidates for a Shadow replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/07\/16\/replacing-shadow-unmanned-aircraft-could-be-quick-win-for-army\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Shadowingarage.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Replacing the Shadow drone could be \u2018quick win\u2019 for the US Army<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As the Army contemplates what unmanned aircraft it will need in the future force, the Shadow UAS may be the first to go.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service\u2019s original plan for a next-gen UAS was to analyze conceptual designs and make decisions in 2019 about what it would like built and flown. But now the service is thinking even bigger when it comes to advanced teaming, and it sees missions for UAS far beyond tactical reconnaissance, Merritt
