Incoming Secretary Deborah Lee James barely had time to unpack her office before the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/2014\/11\/04\/disciplinary-acts-against-air-force-nuke-officers-topped-16\/18478081\/\" title=\"http:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/story\/military\/2014\/11\/04\/disciplinary-acts-against-air-force-nuke-officers-topped-16\/18478081\/\">nuclear cheating scanda<\/a>l exploded. That was followed by the start of the political fight to retire the A-10 Warthog, a fight that may remain<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s<\/span> a thorn in the service&#8217;s side for <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.defensenews.com\/article\/20141115\/CONGRESSWATCH\/311150034\/Fight-Over-10-Re-opens-Hill-US-Air-Force-Divide\" title=\"http:\/\/archive.defensenews.com\/article\/20141115\/CONGRESSWATCH\/311150034\/Fight-Over-10-Re-opens-Hill-US-Air-Force-Divide\">years to come<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>June saw a fire that <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.defensenews.com\/article\/20141015\/DEFREG02\/310150036\/Pentagon-Pratt-Cut-Deal-F-35-Engines-Modifications\" title=\"http:\/\/archive.defensenews.com\/article\/20141015\/DEFREG02\/310150036\/Pentagon-Pratt-Cut-Deal-F-35-Engines-Modifications\">consumed an F-35A model<\/a>, setting off another round of questions and criticisms for the jet that the service says remains its future. Months late, the service found itself being drawn into a new conflict, as the US began pounding first Iraq and then Syria with regular airstrikes targeting the radical Islamic State<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s<\/span> group. And as some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=2014310190006\" title=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=2014310190006\">question the effectiveness<\/a> of those strikes, others warn it is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=2014312070010\" title=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=2014312070010\">putting pressure<\/a> on planned transitions from older platforms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, yes, the Air Force had a busy year.
