{"id":42882,"date":"2022-04-13T15:53:31","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T15:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/04\/13\/leonardo-ceo-european-defense-programs-will-bloom\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:35:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:35:14","slug":"leonardo-ceo-european-defense-programs-will-bloom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2022\/04\/13\/leonardo-ceo-european-defense-programs-will-bloom\/","title":{"rendered":"Leonardo CEO is bullish on Europe\u2019s defense market"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ROME \u2014 The head of Italy\u2019s defense giant Leonardo has said there is a \u201cgreat willingness\u201d in Europe to bring countries together to launch joint defense programs as funding multiplies in the wake of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonardo CEO Alessandro Profumo predicted jointly planned and produced systems were increasingly in demand on the continent after years in which countries duplicated designs, leading to massive wastes of funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a process, it won\u2019t happen immediately, but there is a deep willingness by political and defense players for big opportunities of this kind in Europe,\u201d he told reporters in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Profumo\u2019s optimism comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2022\/03\/25\/budget-hikes-test-shared-european-union-spending-goals\/\">some analysts argued<\/a> that a rush to procure new weaponry in the face of the Russian threat will lead to hurried purchases of off-the-shelf kit, either domestically or from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">European multi-national programs, they said, often evolve when budgets are tight and nations need to share resources, not when budgets are expanding as they are across Europe now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While talking up the prospects of joint programs, Profumo said he did not believe they would immediately trigger cross border mergers between defense companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there will be full mergers, just many joint programs \u2014 but there could be the unification of business lines, like MBDA,\u201d he said, citing the European missile consortium in which various companies, including Leonardo, have pooled their missile work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat could happen in other areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, he said he believed that Germany\u2019s decision to spend an extra \u20ac100 billion (U.S. $109 billion) on defense would involve extra work for Leonardo, with the sale of Italy\u2019s M-346 jet trainer to Germany a possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was also upbeat on the prospect of both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/interviews\/2022\/02\/14\/finnish-air-force-commander-on-running-the-f-35-through-a-time-of-isolation\/\">Finland<\/a> and Germany making use of Italy\u2019s F-35 final assembly and maintenance line in northern Italy as they become F-35 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2022\/03\/14\/germany-to-buy-f-35-warplanes-for-nuclear-deterrence\/\">customers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the war started in February, Italy has also committed to raising its defense spending and hit the NATO spending target of 2% of gross domestic product by 2028, up from the current 1.4%, meaning it will add another \u20ac12 billion to its budget within six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking last week in Rome, defense undersecretary Giorgio Mul\u00e9 listed priorities for the extra spending as drones as well as cyber security and satellites \u2014 two investments he said would have dual-use applications in both the military and civil sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another area for investment with dual uses would be helicopters, he said, starting with Lockheed Martin\u2019s Future Vertical Lift offering on which Leonardo is now teaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat will be used by Italy\u2019s civil protection agency for emergencies and disasters.
