{"id":43066,"date":"2018-12-11T16:26:57","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T16:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/12\/11\/in-thailand-a-networked-air-force-is-the-goal\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:36:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:36:04","slug":"in-thailand-a-networked-air-force-is-the-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2018\/12\/11\/in-thailand-a-networked-air-force-is-the-goal\/","title":{"rendered":"Thailand\u2019s military is working to further link major weapon systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SURAT THANI AIR FORCE BASE, Thailand, and WASHINGTON \u2014 The words \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2018\/11\/28\/will-the-thai-air-force-get-more-gripens\/\" target=_blank>network-centric Air Force<\/a>\u201d are emblazoned all over the buildings that make up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2018\/09\/21\/thailand-orders-more-airbus-helos\/\" target=_blank>Royal Thai Air Force\u2019s<\/a> Wing 7, located at Surat Thani Air Force Base, southern Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One could find it in conference rooms, in promotional videos created to highlight the wing\u2019s significance and on a mural in one space where pilots grab coffee between briefings or sorties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wing 7 is known for being the home of Thailand\u2019s 11 Gripen fighter jets, but its squadron commanders and pilots say the Thai military\u2019s indigenous network, called Link T, is just as critical to the wing\u2019s future.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/asia-pacific\/2018\/11\/28\/will-the-thai-air-force-get-more-gripens\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rtaf-gripen.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Will the Thai Air Force get more Gripen jets?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Thai fighter pilots say more jets are needed. But, as usual, it may come down to budget priorities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having \u201cnetwork-centric wings actually is kind of the big picture of the Royal Thai Air Force,\u201d said Group Capt. Prachya Tippayarat, deputy commander of the RTAF\u2019s Wing 7. \u201cWe had to start almost from \u2014 well, not from zero \u2014 but we had do something to be able to reach that [vision].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Link T, a tactical data link <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/11\/30\/saab-puts-marketing-effort-for-swordfish-maritime-plane-on-hiatus\/\" target=\"_blank\">manufactured by Saab<\/a> and managed by Thailand, makes it possible for Wing 7\u2019s Gripens and its two Saab 340 airborne early warning aircraft to share a common battlespace picture. Defense News visited the Wing 7 from Nov. 27-28 and accepted airfare and accommodations from Saab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the Thai military is working to expand Link T\u2019s reach to make its major weapon systems more interoperable \u2014 a goal that might sound familiar to observers in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top U.S. military leaders such as Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Goldfein and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. The country also has partnerships with China and the United States, and it conducts military exercises with both nations, such as the \u201cFalcon Strike 2018\u201d air force drills that occurred this September with China and the multinational \u201cPitch Black\u201d exercise with Australia, the United States, Canada and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Thailand has good relationships with countries that may be competing or are adversaries with each other, protecting Thai sovereignty \u2014 and its information \u2014 is of primary importance to its government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe aim to have our own defense. We have to be able to stand on our own feet in defense of the country,\u201d Tippayarat said. Link T gives the military \u201c[a] link that we can use every time,\u201d no matter what the situation or threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Link T is \u201ceasy to use,\u201d he said. \u201cWe see everything that happens around us. \u2026 We can see a friendly force. We can see our enemies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The path to developing Link T began around 2008, as Royal Thai Air Force leaders began calling for a more digital air force that would be able to use emerging computer technology and understand English \u2014 which Thai service officials saw as fundamental so that foreign-derived technical publications and tactics could be understood by pilots and maintainers, Tippayarat said.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=eeedb6d2-3a64-4c57-b8a8-49bf2c108f23\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-eeedb6d2-3a64-4c57-b8a8-49bf2c108f23.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Saab&#8217;s second Gripen E aircraft has taken to the skies, setting the program up for deliveries starting in 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cnetwork-centric Air Force\u201d concept then evolved to include the Link T network, Gripen C fighter jets, Saab 340 early airborne warning craft equipped with Saab\u2019s Erieye radar, and the various organizational and maintenance support needed to keep operations going, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/08\/02\/thailands-air-force-requests-funds-to-cover-f-5-tiger-ii-upgrades\/\" target=_blank>add Link T to its fleet of Northrop F-5s<\/a>, and Tippayarat said some aircraft have already received that modification, although he could not say how many. The service is also planning to add the data link to other military aircraft, but the country\u2019s F-16s will not receive that upgrade, but rather continue using the NATO standard Link 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a good thing, Tippayarat said, because it gives the Royal Thai Air Force options on how much data it wants to share or safeguard, depending on the circumstance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have no problem working with the two links. We see that as a strong point because if we have to do something on our own [without allies\u2019 support], then we can use Link T,\u201d he said. \u201cDoesn\u2019t matter when, how or whatever. We can use it on our own. And if we have to join with other coalitions, we have other [data links] \u2014 Link 16 for the F-16.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tippayarat wouldn\u2019t go into details on the measures the pilots take to protect data when they conduct training with China, but did say it\u2019s important to trust in partners while knowing the limits of what can be shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know what we are doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe last three years that we train with them, of course it is eye-opening for us. We do feel privileged because not many countries in the world have a chance to do an air-to-air flight with the [Chinese] air force,\u201d he said. \u201cWe learn from them a lot, and we hope that
