{"id":43286,"date":"2019-05-22T20:29:11","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T20:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/05\/22\/former-leonardo-ceo-gets-final-acquittal-in-helicopter-kickback-case\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:25:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:25:06","slug":"former-leonardo-ceo-gets-final-acquittal-in-helicopter-kickback-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2019\/05\/22\/former-leonardo-ceo-gets-final-acquittal-in-helicopter-kickback-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Leonardo CEO gets final acquittal in helicopter kickback case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ROME \u2014 A former CEO of Italy\u2019s Leonardo and a former fellow manager were given a final and definitive acquittal by Italy\u2019s highest court on Wednesday in a bribery case dating back to the sale of helicopters to India in 2010. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giuseppe Orsi, who ran the firm when it was named Finmeccanica, and Bruno Spagnolini, a former head of the company\u2019s helicopter business, faced multiple trials in a case that dragged on for six years, impacting the firm\u2019s reputation and raising questions about the speed of Italy\u2019s legal system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orsi and Spagnolini were arrested in 2013 on suspicion of paying bribes to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2016\/12\/09\/former-indian-air-force-chief-arrested-in-agustawestland-copter-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">former Indian Air Force chief<\/a> to buy 12 AW101 helicopters in a \u20ac560 million (U.S. $625 million) deal. Following the arrests, India canceled the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the accusations have now been overturned in Italy, the case continues to be the subject of a corruption trial in India, which was launched as a consequence of the Italian allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ennio Amodio, a lawyer representing Orsi, said the Italian court\u2019s decision will have repercussions on the trial in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Clearly the Indian authorities will have to take note of the fact that at the end of a very detailed probe it was found there had never been any corruption,&#8221; he told Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the complex case first went to trial, Orsi and Spagnolini were acquitted of international corruption, but received two-year sentences for the lesser charge of false bookkeeping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Italian law, prosecutors can appeal against acquittals, and an appeal was held in 2016, with Orsi and Spagnolini found guilty on both counts. Orsi was given a four-and-half-year jail term and Spagnolini four years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Italy\u2019s three-tier legal system, the case then headed to the country\u2019s highest court, which found fault with the convictions and sent the case back for another trial in December 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The men were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/01\/09\/court-acquits-ex-leonardo-execs-in-helicopter-bribery-case\/\" target=_blank>acquitted last year<\/a>, but prosecutors again appealed, pushing the case back up to the high court a second time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The high court\u2019s decision Wednesday to back the acquittals, citing a lack of
