{"id":43508,"date":"2020-11-30T19:31:12","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T19:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/11\/30\/a-new-design-is-almost-ready-for-the-kc-46s-most-troubled-system\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:30:00","slug":"a-new-design-is-almost-ready-for-the-kc-46s-most-troubled-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2020\/11\/30\/a-new-design-is-almost-ready-for-the-kc-46s-most-troubled-system\/","title":{"rendered":"A new design is almost ready for the KC-46\u2032s most troubled system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Air Force and Boeing have almost finalized a new design of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2020\/04\/02\/done-deal-boeing-will-have-to-rip-and-replace-kc-46-sensor-and-camera-systems-on-its-own-dime\/\" target=_blank>the problem-plagued system <\/a>that must be overhauled before<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2020\/10\/28\/boeing-has-another-overrun-on-the-kc-46-but-its-ceo-says-theres-some-reason-for-hope\/\" target=_blank> the KC-46 tanker<\/a> is ready for combat operations, the service\u2019s acquisition executive said Nov. 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike legacy tankers, where boom operators look out a window and rely on line-of-sight visual cues to guide the refueling boom into a receiver aircraft, KC-46 boomers use a series of cameras and sensors called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/air-warfare-symposium\/2020\/02\/20\/top-us-air-force-general-hopes-for-major-kc-46-fix-by-march\/\" target=_blank>Remote Vision System<\/a>. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2020\/03\/03\/a-fix-for-the-kc-46-is-already-a-year-late\/\" target=_blank>years of disagreements<\/a> between the Air Force and KC-46 prime contractor Boeing about whether the current RVS met requirements, the parties in April agreed to replace the original system with a completely redesigned \u201cRVS 2.0.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve completed nearly every aspect of the design except the actual projection method,\u201d Will Roper, the Air Force\u2019s assistant secretary for acquisition, technology and logistics, said during a roundtable with reporters last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force is considering two different options to project the images from the tanker\u2019s rear camera system to the boom operators who sit at the front of the aircraft: a collimated mirror design, which uses a curved mirror to project a wide field of view to the user, and an LCD-type screen similar to modern televisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roper characterized the difference between the two methods as \u201ca hyper-stereo system\u201d that would deliver near-perfect optics versus \u201ca more mature technology\u201d with less risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce they\u2019ve selected that final projection method, the rest of the design is complete, so we\u2019ll be ready to go ahead and start building a laboratory system,\u201d Roper said. \u201cEvery component that we would install on the jet, we\u2019ll just do that on the ground, and that would give us a lot of confidence that when we install the jet itself, that it will work as advertised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force plans to buy at least 179 KC-46s, with the first tanker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2019\/01\/10\/boeing-delivers-first-kc-46-but-fixes-to-technical-problems-still-years-away\/\" target=_blank>accepted by the service<\/a> in January 2019. Boeing agreed to take total financial responsibility for developing the new RVS system, cutting the new design into the production line and modifying tankers already delivered to the Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, the company has delivered more than 30 KC-46s to the service, which all must receive a retrofit service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a short-term stopgap, Boeing offered<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/afa-air-space\/2020\/09\/16\/air-force-needs-more-data-before-making-a-decision-on-enhanced-kc-46-vision-system\/\" target=_blank> an enhanced version of the current RVS system<\/a> to the Air Force in order to bridge the gap before RVS 2.0 comes online in 2023 or 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the service ultimately chose to move forward with the so-called RVS 1.5, Boeing could start incorporating those upgrades in the second half of 2021, according to Mike Hafer, the company\u2019s KC-46 global sales lead, who spoke during a briefing in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Roper stressed that \u201cit\u2019s really 2.0 that has the lion\u2019s share of our attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force completed its assessment of the enhanced system this fall. While there are \u201ca few capabilities\u201d that the service will cut into the baseline system, Roper said that none of the improvements are \u201cearth-shattering\u201d or have changed the Air
