{"id":43788,"date":"2021-09-21T17:58:58","date_gmt":"2021-09-21T17:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/09\/21\/turkish-firm-kale-delivers-homemade-turbojet-engine-for-missiles\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:29:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:29:47","slug":"turkish-firm-kale-delivers-homemade-turbojet-engine-for-missiles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/techwatch\/2021\/09\/21\/turkish-firm-kale-delivers-homemade-turbojet-engine-for-missiles\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkish firm Kale delivers homemade turbojet engine for missiles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MERSIN, Turkey \u2014 Turkish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2020\/06\/26\/turkeys-chronic-engine-problem-is-harming-defense-projects-warn-officials\/\" target=\"_blank\">engine-developer<\/a> Kale R&amp;D has completed the first deliveries of the KTJ-3200, the country\u2019s first indigenous turbojet engine, which will power the homemade standoff missile and Atmaca anti-ship missile, the company confirmed to Defense News on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One KTJ-3200 was sent to Tubitak Sage for the standoff missile, and another was delivered to Roketsan for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2015\/07\/18\/turkey-advances-indigenous-missile-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Atmaca<\/a>. The first standoff cruise missiles to be equipped with the KTJ-3200 are expected to be fired in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A contract for the serial production of the KTJ-3200 engine was signed in Istanbul during the International Defence Industry Fair, which took place Aug. 17-20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe project began in 2012 with the goal of supplying power to indigenous [standoff] missiles. However, because the development and testing phases of the Atmaca missile were completed concurrently with the development phase of the engine project, it became possible to use the engine in the Atmaca missile as well,\u201d a defense industry source told Defense News on condition of anonymity, per the source\u2019s employer\u2019s policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Architecturally speaking, the KTJ-3200 engine is similar to the French TR40 engine. Although the TR40 has a slightly lighter and more fuel-efficient engine, the performance difference is negligible compared to the KTJ-3200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, the KTJ-3200 was made using domestic resources, the source explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KTJ-3200 project is unrelated to the development of indigenous jet engines, the source said, adding that \u201cthe first critical step in future aircraft engine development is to design a long-lasting engine.\u201d The KTJ-3200 is capable of supporting a missile\u2019s flight throughout its entire mission (which is for only about 15-20 minutes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2020\/12\/14\/turkey-to-test-first-indigenous-helicopter-engine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turkey\u2019s first general-purpose helicopter, Gokbey<\/a>, will be powered by the TS1400 engine developed by Tusas Engine Industries, which the source said will contribute to the development of aircraft engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KTJ-3200 was specifically developed for use on cruise missiles, drones as well as what a Presidency of Defence Industries brochure ambiguously called \u201csimilar applications.\u201d The engine previously demonstrated its performance in altitude and Mach-speed conditions at the Altitude Test Facility housed within Kale R&amp;D\u2019s Development and Test Center. It was validated after a variety of tests, including a flight test that included trials of endurance, water ingestion, distortion, MIL-STD-810 environmental performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kale R&amp;D has been developing turbojet engines for Roketsan\u2019s medium-range anti-ship missile system, dubbed OMGF, and Tubitak Sage\u2019s Kuzgun-TJ smart
