Jarocki\/Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 Courtesy of BAE Systems, some Virginia-class submarines will be able to pack a bigger punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Navy has granted a contract to British company to produce payload tubes for two of the service\u2019s Block V Virginia-class subs. Each will be extended in length with an additional mid-body section to create additional room for payloads and, in turn, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/nuclear-triad\/2018\/03\/19\/dods-cost-of-low-yield-nuclear-warhead-for-submarines-set-at-485-million\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">greater firepower<\/a>. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One large-diameter payload tube can store and launch up to seven Tomahawk cruise missiles. The four new tubes per sub will add to the existing firepower of the two large-diameter, 87-inch Virginia Payload Tubes on the bow, each capable of launching six Tomahawk cruise missiles<br><\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/commentary\/2018\/05\/30\/why-the-us-should-stock-up-on-tomahawks\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635610812077850472-041111nt-barry02jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why the US should stock up on Tomahawk cruise missiles<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Tomahawk cruise missile is one of the most effective and highly utilized weapons in the U.S. arsenal \u2015 and we have decided to stop producing them.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work will be performed at BAE System\u2019s facility in Louisville, Kentucky, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has paid particular attention to submarine production recently, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/04\/23\/us-navy-gearing-up-for-boost-in-submarine-production\/\">pushing up timetables<\/a> for the Virginia class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Virginia Payload Module is \u201ccritical to the Navy\u2019s undersea presence,\u201d according to Joe Senftle, vice president and general manager of weapon systems at BAE.
