{"id":44233,"date":"2022-06-10T18:19:02","date_gmt":"2022-06-10T18:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/10\/biden-nixes-trump-design-for-air-force-one-over-cost-delay\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:31:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:31:55","slug":"biden-nixes-trump-design-for-air-force-one-over-cost-delay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/06\/10\/biden-nixes-trump-design-for-air-force-one-over-cost-delay\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden nixes Trump design for Air Force One over cost, delay"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 U.S. President Joe Biden\u2019s administration has scrapped former President Donald Trump\u2019s red, white and blue design for the new generation of presidential aircraft after an Air Force review suggested it would raise costs and delay the delivery of the new jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2022\/04\/27\/boeing-ceo-regrets-air-force-one-deal-amid-big-quarterly-losses\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boeing is currently modifying two Boeing 747-800 aircraft<\/a> that will bear the Air Force One callsign when the president is onboard to replace the existing fleet of two aging Boeing 747-200 aircraft. Trump, in 2018, directed that the new jumbo jets shed the iconic Kennedy-era robin\u2019s egg blue and white design for a deeper navy and streak of dark red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump paint scheme is not being considered because it could drive additional engineering, time and cost, according to an administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ann Stefanek, a spokesperson for the Air Force, told Defense News that \u201canalysis concluded darker colors, among other factors, on the underside of the VC-25B aircraft might contribute to temperatures exceeding the current qualification limits of a small number of components on the aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VC-25B refers to the 747-800 after modifications for presidential use. The current generation of planes, the VC-25A aircraft, first carried President George H.W. Bush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he was in office, Trump kept a mockup of the new presidential plane in the new color scheme on a coffee table in the Oval Office. \u201cThe baby blue doesn\u2019t fit with us,\u201d he told Fox News in 2019 after earlier unveiling sketches of his ideal redesign for the plane\u2019s exterior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/transition\/2021\/01\/21\/trump-didnt-influence-program-details-on-air-force-one-jedi-says-acquisition-head\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trump\u2019s design<\/a> used the colors of the American flag. The top half of the plane would be white, while dark blue would cover the bottom half, including the belly. A bold red stripe would streak from cockpit to tail across the midsection \u2014 almost identical to the color scheme on Trump\u2019s personal plane, except that the white and blue were reversed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The administration did not formally unveil a new design for the replacement aircraft, which are currently at a Boeing plant in San Antonio, Texas, undergoing extensive modifications to prepare them to carry the president. They currently sport a simple white and blue paint job with U.S. Air Force markings as the work proceeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new aircraft are estimated to replace the VC-25A planes in 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/05\/19\/new-air-force-one-planes-could-be-up-to-three-years-late\/\" target=\"_blank\">years behind
